Box Score EMMITSBURG, Md. - The UMBC women's basketball (0-2) team dropped a 72-58 weekend contest to the Mount St. Mary's Mountaineers (1-2) on Saturday, Dec. 5 at Knott Arena.
Three Retrievers reached double-digits on the day, including senior Janee'a Summers (Bound Brook, N.J.) and sophomore Lyric Swann (Elkridge, Md./Long Reach) who each scored 11, and junior Jada Clowers (Macon, Ga.) who put in 10 of her own.
The Mount started out with a 4-0 lead in the first quarter before Patricia Anumgba (Silver Spring, Md./Paint Branch) put the first points on the board for the Retrievers. Swann and Anumgba kept things close early on, holding the Mountaineers to a 9-6 lead with six minutes to play. However, the Mount opened up a 7-0 run to take a 10-point lead late. The Mountaineers continued to grow their lead before senior Jen Gast (Baltimore, Md./Catsonville) scored the final four points of the quarter to cut Mount St. Mary's lead to 24-14.
The Retrievers controlled most of the second quarter, going on a 12-2 run in the middle of the quarter to cut the Mountaineers down to three, 30-27, with 2:14 to play. The run was fueled by four points from Juliet Esadah (Henrico, Va.), six points from Clowers, and capped by a jump shot by Swann. Mount St. Mary's responded with a seven-point spurt of their own and went into the half with a 37-29 lead.
The teams went back and forth in the open five minutes of the third quarter with Swann, Anumgba, and Clowers all chipping in baskets before Mount St. Mary's broke open a 21-point lead, 57-36, with 1:55 to play. In the final ten minutes of the game, Summers scored eight of her 11 points to help cut the Mountaineers lead to 15, 64-49, with 6:34 on the clock. The Retrievers closed out the game on a 9-3 run, including a three from Swann and a final basket from Summers.
Overall, the Mount outshot the Retrievers, 52.7 percent (29-55) to 23-62 (37.1) from the floor. UMBC converted only one three-point shot (Swann at the 2:11 mark in the fourth quarter), while the Mount made eight of the 26 that they attempted.
38 of UMBC's 58 points were scored in the paint and 18 were off second-chance opportunities. The Retrievers outrebounded the Mountaineers, 38-35, and recorded 12 steals to The Mount's 5; Swann and Anumgba each had three on the day.
The Retrievers will return to action on Thursday, December 10 when they travel to Howard for a 5 p.m. contest with the Bison.
