From 2021-23, a major renovation project took place at UMBC Stadium and the work was completed for the 2023 lacrosse season.
The complex now features
- A new press box with multiple broadcast booths and a VIP area
- A fan amenities building and plaza on the hill overlooking the field, which includes ticketing, concessions and restrooms
- New stairways, ramps and a bridge from Hilltop Circle, making the facility much more accessible for all spectators
- New bleacher seating with ADA accessible areas just below the press box
The stadium was built in 1976 with a seating capacity of 4,000. Lights were added in 1992, and in 1996 a world-class track and field complex was added, which included jumping and throwing areas. Moreover, the original grass surface was replaced by artificial turf.
A new $5 million locker room complex was completed in the spring of 2008 and currently houses all of UMBC's outdoor teams. The complex features eight locker rooms, as well as a new sports medicine facility, a laundry room, a meeting room that will be available to the media, and coaches' and officials' locker rooms.
In the summer of 2014, UMBC Athletics installed a new surface at the stadium. King Sports Construction was the contractor for the project, which utilized the Field Turf Revolution system. Coupled with FieldTurf's patented heavy three-layer infill system and state-of-the-art SureLock coating method, the FieldTurf Revolution turf system has been designed to be the very best synthetic turf system with unparalleled player safety and turf drainage rates.
The surface features in-laid lines for lacrosse and the Retriever logo in the center of the field, Retriever Soccer Park, which features a Bermuda grass surface, serves as the soccer program's primary field, but the UMBC Stadium field may be used in poor weather conditions.
Moreover, King Sports also installed a new backstop netting system at UMBC Stadium.
The upgrade replaces Sportexe's Momentum 51 synthetic turf, which was set up in the spring of 2005.
