BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – The UMBC baseball team (7-24, 0-6 America East) lost both games of a doubleheader to Binghamton (12-14, 2-3 America East) Saturday afternoon NYSEG Stadium, home of the Binghamton Mets.
Freshman Anthony Gatto (Hauppage, N.Y./Smithtown West) led the Retrievers at the plate going 3-for-7 (.429) with a double and a triple while knocking in two runs.
In game one, the Retrievers rallied for six runs to pull within two runs in the top of the seventh inning, but stranded runners on second and third to end the game.
After a scoreless first inning, the Bearcats scored one in the second and four in the third to stake to a 5-0 lead against UMBC starter Steve Miller (Newark, Del./Dickinson). The right-hander last six innings, but took the loss giving up four earned runs on eight hits while recording one strikeout.
Binghamton added three more runs in the bottom of the sixth and looked set to cruise to a win.
Sophomore Rob McCabe (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Joseph's Prep) started off the seventh on the right foot for UMBC, doubling down the left field line. Junior Jason Allinder (Snow Hill, Md./Snow Hill/Chesapeake CC) and freshman Vince Corbi (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) followed with singles with the latter driving in McCabe to get the Retrievers on the board.
Senior Mike Lafferty (Baltimore, Md./Mount St. Joseph's) then stepped up and roped a double down the line bringing in Allinder to cut the lead to six, 8-2. After sophomore D.J. Smith (Millersvile, Md./Old Mill) was hit with a pitch, freshman Ian Glassman (Basking Ridge, N.J./Rutgers Prep) singled to plate Corbi, trimming the lead to 8-3.
Binghamton then brought in a new pitcher and senior Curtis Shickner (East Windsor, N.J./Lawrenceville Prep) greeted him with a single through the left side to drive in Lafferty. Binghamton was then able to turn a double play, but junior Tom Gilchrist (Olney, Md./Sherwood/Chesapeake CC) lined an RBI single and McCabe hit his second double of the inning to bring UMBC within two, 8-6.
Bearcat reliever Lee Sosa then got the last out to preserve the win.
In game two, the Retrievers continued their hot streak, opening the game with three runs in the top of the first including a two-RBI double by senior Brian Klukowicz (Clifton, N.J./St. Peter's Prep).
Binghamton however, answered with three runs of its own in the bottom of the inning and plated three more in the second to build a 6-3 lead.
The Retrievers pulled within one, 6-5, in the top of the third with a two-run inning but could not tie the game.
Sophomore Mac Gill (Bethesda, Md./Walter Johnson) took the loss for UMBC after yielding six runs, only three of them earned, on six hits in just 1.2 innings of work.
The Bearcats scored once in the fourth and three times in the fifth, stretching their lead to 10-5 before UMBC scored two in the top of the sixth.
UMBC and Binghamton return to the downtown stadium tomorrow for the finale of the three-game weekend series. Sophomore Shane Vlasic (Ashburn, Va./Broad Run) will take the hill for the Retrievers while the Bearcats counter with righty Jake Lambert. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
DAWG BITES
- UMBC pitchers extended their streak to 46 consecutive games with at least one strikeout after picking up one in the first game and four in the second contest.
- Binghamton now leads the all-time series between the two schools 30-3 and has now won the last 17 meetings.
- Himmelstein hit his seventh homerun of the season in game two. The first baseman has now matched the 2011 UMBC team total for homeruns in a season.
- With three doubles in game one and a total of five extra-base hits in game two, the Retrievers have now recorded multiple extra-bag hits in seven straight games.
- Glassman extended his career-long hitting streak to eight games with a hit in each game.
