Bowen Departs UMBC After Seven Years at the Helm

BALTIMORE - After completing his seventh season as the head coach of the UMBC Baseball program, Liam Bowen will step down to become the head coach at Towson University.

"UMBC Athletics is extremely grateful for all of the hard work Coach Bowen has put in during his 15 years with the Retrievers," said Director of Athletics, Physical Education, and Recreation Tiffany D. Tucker. "He has been an outstanding ambassador for the Retrievers as both an assistant and head coach. We are sad to see him go, but wish him and his family nothing but the best in his next opportunity."

Bowen leaves UMBC after an impressive 2026 campaign that saw the Retrievers post a 29-24 record and earn the number two seed in the America East Playoffs. Bowen's Retrievers have won at least 27 games in three of the past four seasons. Before being named head coach in 2019, Bowen served as the pitching coach and recruiting coordinator during the 2017 America East Championship run.

"After a 15-year run at UMBC, I am overwhelmed with gratitude," said Bowen. "Gratitude for the amazing people I've gotten to coach, the staff that so energetically supported our efforts, the administration that made me a head coach and allowed me to grow in that role, and gratitude for everyone working together to leave the program in a good place."

Under Bowen's leadership, Ehi Okojie became the first-ever UMBC player to win the Len Harlow America East Player of the Year award. Luke Johnson was named America East Pitcher of the Year twice under Bowen's watch, while Conrad Wozniak earned the honor in 2015 while Bowen was the Pitching Coach. This spring, Bowen became the first UMBC coach since Bob Mumma in 2015 to be named America East Coach of the Year.

"It's been an honor to be a part of this program for so long," said Bowen. "It's time for a new challenge, but I will always think of UMBC as a special place and will be rooting for the Retrievers."

A national search for UMBC's next head baseball coach will begin immediately.
