BALTIMORE - UMBC Director of Athletics, Physical Education, and Recreation, Tiffany D. Tucker announced the hiring of Dave Gage as the new head coach of the Retrievers' Baseball program today.

Gage comes to the Hilltop as the winningest head coach at both Stevenson University and Southern Vermont before serving as the Associate Head Coach at Mount St. Mary's from 2024-2026.

"It's A Great Day To Be A Retriever!," said Tucker. "We are thrilled to welcome Coach Gage as the next head coach of UMBC baseball. Coach Gage is extremely well respected in the area and has had success at multiple levels as a head coach and top assistant. We are excited to bring another talented coach and outstanding human being into our department."

Before his time at the Mount, Gage led Stevenson for six seasons (2018-23), finishing with the top winning percentage in program history thanks to three 20-plus win seasons.

"I am incredibly thankful and excited to be the next Head Baseball Coach at UMBC," said Gage. "This is a great opportunity to continue the recent success of the program and bring high-achieving student-athletes to Baltimore County."

Student-athletes under his watch earned four All-Regional selections, with three MAC Commonwealth Pitcher of the Year honors, and 10 All-Conference awards, with three more earning honorable mention status. In the classroom, Gage's teams won Academic Awards presented by the American Baseball Coaches Association in all six years.

Prior to his time at Stevenson, he needed just five seasons (2013-17) to become the winningest coach in Southern Vermont College history. The Mountaineers set a program record for wins in 2016, taking a runner-up spot in the New England Collegiate Conference. Nine SVC players in that span also went on to earn placements on All-Conference teams. 

At Mount, he helped the program win its first postseason game since 2008 and make its first postseason appearance since 2018. MSM reached the MAAC semifinals in 2024 and made the playoffs in 2025. 

Under his tutelage, the pitching staff broke six program records, including strikeouts, K/9, and batting average against. His pitchers also set a MAAC record in strikeouts with 507 in 2024 and led the MAAC in strikeouts per game in 2025. Mount pitchers have also garnered multiple individual accolades, including two freshman All-America honors. Three Mount St. Mary's pitchers have earned All-Conference honors, and Gage coached Deven Sheerin, a recent draft pick of the Philadelphia Phillies, to MAAC Rookie of the Year honors in 2024.
 
A 2010 graduate of SVC and valedictorian of his class, Gage served as captain and starting second baseman, compiling a .305 career batting average and holding the highest on-base percentage (.480) in program history. He also towed the rubber as a relief pitcher, earning a program-record nine saves. He was inducted into the school's athletic hall of fame in 2016.
