Baltimore, Md. - The UMBC women's basketball team (3-21, 3-12 AE) battled back after a tough first half to tie the game at 48-48 and go into the extra session but were unable to complete the comeback as America East Conference opponent Binghamton (15-8, 10-5 AE) held off the Retrievers to get the 60-55 (OT) win at UMBC RAC Arena on Wednesday night.  Maria Brown (Frederick, Md./Frederick) scored in double digits for the fourth consecutive game tying a career-high with 19 points.

With a 48-48 tie at the end of regulation, Brown gave the Retrievers the lead on two occasions in the opening two minutes of the overtime period, hitting a jumper to give UMBC a 50-48 lead and connecting on two free throws to put the Retrievers ahead 52-51.  Rachel Laws, however, made a lay-up after an offensive rebound for the Bearcats, who recorded 13 offensive boards in the game, to give Binghamton at 53-52 advantages with 1:26 to play. 

The Bearcats never trailed again scoring their final seven points from the free throw line to take the five-point victory.

UMBC struggled in the first half shooting 35.3 percent (6-of-17) and 2-of-11 for 18.2 percent from three-point range as they trailed 27-14 at the break. 

The Retrievers in the second half whittled away at the Bearcat lead as they closed the gap to four, 47-43, as Brown found Anastasia Goncharova open outside the arc for a three-pointer with 2:31 to play. 

After a defensive stop by the Retrievers, Brown connected on a trey behind a screen from Sharri Rohde (Indianapolis, Ind./Franklin Central) to pull UMBC within one 47-46. 

The Retrievers tied the game at 48-48 after Rachel Laws made 1-of-2 from the free throw line as Rohde dished a backdoor pass to a cutting Mariana Santos (Presidente, Brazil/Americana) as Santos laid in the ball with 51 seconds remaining.

Both teams had opportunities to break the tie but were unsuccessful as the game went into the extra session.

Goncharova finished with 11 points to go along with Brown's 19 and Laws led the Bearcats with 17 points while Leala Wewerth and Kate Townley each tallied 11.
