MARIA BROWN HITS GAME-WINNING JUMPER WITH 12 SECONDS TO PLAY AS WOMEN'S BASKETBALL UPSETS UNH, 48-47

DURHAM, N.H.-- Maria Brown scored a game-high 16 points and scored five points in the closing 1:07 of the contest to lead the UMBC to a 48-47 victory in Lundholm Gymnasium on Thursday evening.

The Wildcats (9-13 overall, 5-8 America East) led by five points (46-41) with 1:44 to play following a free throw by freshman forward Ray Williams. However, a pair of free throws by UMBC's Mariana Santos cut the lead to three (46-43) with 1:29 to go. After a free throw by senior center Maren Matthias gave UNH a 47-43 advantage with 1:21 to play, Brown connected on a three-pointer to pull her team to within one point (47-46). Following a missed shot by Williams with 43 seconds to go, Brown struck again, this time with a jumper with 17 seconds remaining to give the Retrievers their one point advantage (48-47). The Wildcats called three timeouts with 12 seconds remaining before sophomore guard Kate Poulin drove to the hoop and missed as time ran out on the Wildcats.

UMBC improved to 3-19 overall and 3-10 in America East and has won three of its last six contests. The Retrievers have won two straight for the first time this season and earned their first road victory of the year.

Anastasia Goncharova added 12 points for UMBC.

UNH jumped out to an early lead in the first half and led by as many as six points, but the Retrievers stayed close and the score at the half was tied at 21.

Neither team shot well from the floor, as UMBC was 17-43 (.378) and UNH was 14-38, .368. The Retrievers did shoot well from long distance, sinking 10-22 three-pointers for a percentage of .455.
