Game One:
UMBC and Stony Brook both started out strong on the mound with neither team getting much at the plate. UMBC finally broke through in their half of the second. Christian Easley (Collinsville, Va.) led off the inning with a solo home run that gave UMBC a 1-0 lead. Jack Ryan (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) pushed the second run across that scored Adam Schwartz (Akron, Pa.) to give UMBC a 2-0 lead.
The Retrievers broke it open in the fourth with five runs. Schwartz led off the inning with a solo home run. Luke Belanger (Alexandria, Va.) reached on a throwing error that scored Michael Cilio (Chester, N.J.) to give UMBC a 4-0 lead. Ryan would score on a wild pitch and Belanger would come home on a sacrifice fly from Drew Roberts to increase the lead to 6-0. UMBC made it 7-0 with Ian Diaz (Philadelphia, Pa.) scoring on a bunt from Nolan Charlton (Atlantic City, N.J.).
UMBC got another run on a Belanger RBI double to make it 8-0. Stony Brook did not go quietly. They scored two in the sixth and got it to within one in the seventh, but UMBC held on for an 8-7 win in game one.
Reid Celata (Virginia Beach, Va.) got the win in 6.2 innings of work with three strikeouts. Tyler McDonnell (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) picked up the save getting a strikeout to end it.
Schwartz was the lone Retriever with multiple hits driving in a run.
Game Two:
Stony Brook got things going with a run in the second inning to take an early lead. UMBC answered right back in their half. Easley reached on a fielder's choice and would later score on a Michael Cilio single up the middle to tie it.
However, that would be all the Retrievers would muster. Stony Brook scored the next 12 runs including five in the seventh in a 13-1 win.
Cilio had two of the four Retriever hits in the contest.
UMBC and Stony Brook will conclude their series tomorrow with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. The team will honor their eight seniors prior to game one.
