Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Video Highlights: Game 1 | Game 2

BALTIMORE-- UMBC baseball continued their strong offensive output, completing their season-opening sweep of Delaware State with an 18-2 and 14-6 win on Sunday. The Retrievers tallied 52 runs over three games, including 32 on Sunday alone to improve to 3-0 on the year.

Game One:

UMBC wasted no time putting up a four-spot in the bottom of the first. Three of the runs came off the bat of Christian Torres (Miami, Fla.) who belted a three-run home run to right-center, scoring Michael Cilio (Chester, N.J.) and Christian Easley (Collinsville, Va.). Luke Belanger (Alexandria, Va.) added another run in the inning with an RBI double that scored Ian Diaz (Philadelphia, Pa.). The Retrievers added two more in the fourth and fifth to take an 8-0 lead.

Christian Maceda (Oradell, N.J.) provided the exclamation point with a pinch-hit grand slam in the sixth, part of an eight-run inning. Peter Godrick (Millersville, Md./Archbishop Spalding) had an RBI ground out that scored one with three runs coming off errors.

Delaware State would respond with a pair in the eighth, but UMBC answered right back with Luke Trythall (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) and Ethan Wentzlaff (Damascus, Md./Damascus) singling home runs to give UMBC an 18-2 win.

Reid Celata (Virginia Beach, Va.) picked up the win, hurling six scoreless innings with five strikeouts.

Game Two:

Ian Diaz continued his torrid day with a solo home run in the first inning. The Retrievers padded their lead with a four-run third inning highlighted by a run on a fielding error, and Adam Schwartz (Akron, Pa.) RBI fielder's choice, and Dylan Wilkinson (Fairfax, Va.) RBI single that scored two.

UMBC put the game away with a five-run fifth with only one run coming off a base hit. The Hornets tried to mount a comeback in the sixth, cutting the deficit in half to make it 10-5. But four runs in the home half of the sixth gave UMBC a 14-6 win in game two to complete the sweep.

Joe Nestel (Drexel Hills, Pa.) picked up the win tossing five scoreless innings with seven strikeouts and giving up just one hit.

The Retrievers will head to George Mason on Friday, March 12 before hosting a pair against St. Bonaventure on Saturday and finishing up at home against George Mason on Sunday.
