Retriever Baseball Splits Doubleheader Against UMass Lowell on Saturday

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Game 1 Video Highlights

BALTIMORE-- UMBC baseball won the opener of today's doubleheader, 3-2, before falling in the second game 21-14. UMBC got a complete game, three-hitter from Reid Celata (Virginia Beach, Va.) in game one for his third win of the season.

Game One:

UMBC got things going early with Christian Torres (Miami, Fla.) blasting a two-run home run in the first to give the Retrievers an early 2-0 lead. Not to be outdone, Ian Diaz (Philadelphia, Pa.) drilled a solo shot to left in the second to give the Retrievers an early 3-0 lead.

UMass Lowell would cut into the deficit, getting a run in the fourth and sixth to make it 3-2, but Celata was magnificent on the hill, holding the River Hawks to just three hits in a 3-2 win.

Celata went the distance giving up three hits with two strikeouts. Diaz was the lone Retriever with multiple hits, driving in one run.

Game Two:

Game two saw both sides find their offensive rhythm with 37 combined hits and 35 runs.

UMass Lowell got things started with a three-spot in their half of the first, but the Retrievers responded with a Nolan Charlton (Atlantic City, N.J.) two-RBI double and Dylan Wilkinson (Fairfax, Va.) RBI groundout to tie it. The River Hawks, however, would score the next eight runs over the second and third innings to take an 11-3 lead.

UMBC got one back in the fourth on a Torres RBI groundout. After UML scored two more in the fifth, Ian Diaz struck again with a solo home run that was followed by a Jack Ryan (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) home run to cut it to 13-6. The Retrievers would not stop there, getting an RBI from Drew Roberts (Matthews, N.C.) and Christian Easley (Collinsville, Va.) to make it 13-9 into the sixth.

However, every time the Retrievers answered, UMass Lowell responded. Trailing 18-9 in the seventh, Christian Maceda (Oradell, N.J.) drove in Michael Cilio (Chester, N.J.) and Joe Novenche (Clifton Park, N.Y.) singled in Adam Schwartz (Akron, Pa.) to make it an 18-12 game. Maceda would homer in the ninth and Ryan Cole (Endwell, N.Y.) would double home Novenche, but the River Hawks would go on to win 21-14.

Charlton and Roberts each had three hits in the loss with Charlton and Maceda each driving in two runs.

The two will conclude their series tomorrow with a doubleheader at noon.
