Bangor, Maine— UMBC women's basketball suffered a 69-36 loss to Maine on Sunday afternoon. Sophomore Allison McGrath (South Park, Pa./South Park) led the way with nine points, as nine different Retrievers scored.

The Retrievers fall to 2-19, 1-7 AE on the year while the Black Bears improve to 13-8, 6-2 AE on the season.

McGrath was one of nine Retrievers to score, leading the way with nine points and five rebounds. Freshman Janee'a Summers (Bound Brook, N.J./Bound Brook) chipped in eight points and four boards in the loss.

Maine had three hit double figures, with all three scoring 14 points. Tanesha Sutton led the way with 14 points, nine rebounds, five steals and five assists. Julie Brosseau and Blanca Millan also had 14 in the win.

Maine jumped out to a 10-3 lead early on, scoring seven straight following a Janee'a Summers and on that tied the game at 3-3. The Black Bears would end the quarter on a 13-2 run, holding UMBC to just one field goal in the opening ten minutes.

McGrath would end the field goal and scoring drought with a three pointer from the right wing after UMBC went ten minutes without a field goal. She struck again on the next possession, helping to spark the UMBC offense. The Retrievers would cut the deficit to as many as 16 during the second quarter. However, the Black Bears scored the final six points of the second to take a 36-16 lead at the break.

McGrath led UMBC with six points, as Summers chipped in four points with Brittani Burgess (White Plains, Md./St. Mary's Ryken/VCU) adding seven rebounds. Maine got 14 points from Julie Brosseau in the opening half, going 4-8 from three.

Both teams struggle from the floor coming out of halftime as each team scored just seven points. The Retrievers used a 7-0 spurt over a six-minute stretch to cut the deficit to 41-23.

Freshman Jen Gast (Baltimore, Md./Catonsville) started the run with a baseline jumper, followed by a Te'yJah Oliver (Clinton, Md./Riverdale Baptist) driving layup and capped by a McGrath triple.

The Black Bears would come out firing in the fourth, putting up 26 points in the final stanza, hitting six threes as they would go on to win 69-36 on Sunday.

UMBC will return to Baltimore to host Stony Brook on Wednesday, Jan. 31. The game between the Retrievers and the Seawolves will be the final game played at the RAC Arena, as both the men's and women's teams will be heading to the UMBC Event Center next week. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. on America East TV.
