Hempstead, N.Y.— UMBC women's basketball got big performances from Te'yJah Oliver (Clinton, Md./Riverdale Baptist) and Janee'a Summers (Bound Brook, N.J./Bound Brook), but fell 71-55 to Hofstra on Sunday. Oliver scored 17 points, while Summers added 11 and 11 rebounds in the loss.

UMBC falls to 0-2 while Hofstra improves to 1-0 on the year.

Summers had it going early, grabbing the offensive rebound and putting back the layup for an and one to tie the game at 10-10 early. She then came down the very next possession and drilled a three to give UMBC the lead.

The Pride responded with a run of their own, holding the Retrievers scoreless for the last three minutes of the quarter to take a 19-17 lead after one.

Sophomore guard Te'yJah Oliver ended the drought with a floater on the baseline to cut the deficit to two before beating the shot clock with a deep three from just inside half court to tie it at 22.

That sparked a 7-0 Retriever run that spanned two minutes, holding Hofstra scoreless to take their largest lead of the half early. Freshman Melody Van Ness (Somerville, N.J./Somerville) hit a three, with Lucrezia Costa (Rome, Italy) hitting a free throw on the run.

The Pride would respond with a 6-0 run of their own to retake the lead, but senior Chukwuma Chiamaka (Lagos, Nigeria) ended the run with a put back for her first points since the 2015-16 season.

Allison McGrath (South Park, Pa./South Park) ended the half on a high note for the Retrievers getting fouled on a three at the buzzer and hitting all three free throws to make it 34-33 at the break.

Summers led all scorers with 11 points as the Retrievers scored 13 second chance points in the opening 20 minutes.

The Retrievers opened the second half with a flurry, hitting six straight to take the lead back holding the Pride without a field goal for four minutes. Hofstra would score the last five points of the quarter to take a 50-45 lead into the fourth.

The Pride would go on a 10-0 run late in the fourth to take the lead for good, winning by a score of 71-55.

Oliver led the way with 17 points. Summers added 11 points and 11 rebounds for her first career double-double.

UMBC returns home to take on Gettysburg on Tuesday, Nov. 14 at 7 p.m. The game will be streamed on ESPN 3 with Gary Stein, Raven Harris and Pandora Wilson on the call.
