Box Score Towson, Md. – The 11th-ranked Towson Tigers built an insurmountable lead, and despite a good second half response by UMBC, the Retrievers fell, 14-6, at Johnny Unitas Stadium.
UMBC senior midfielder Jack Gannon (Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) tied a career-high with four assists and freshman midfielder Ryan Baker (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) scored the first two goals of his collegiate career to share goal-scoring honors for the visitors. Senior attackman Drew Borsody (Germantown ,Md./Seneca Valley) and junior linemate Max Maxwell (Hamburg, N.Y.) also tallied a pair of goals.
A pair of sophomores also produced solid days for the Retrievers. Long-stick midfielder Billy O'Hara (Davidsonville, Md./South River) co-led the Retrievers with four ground balls and caused a pair of turnovers, while netminder David Pisanic (Towson, Md./Boys' Latin) made six saves and allowed five Tigers goals in the final 30 minutes.
Ten Tigers hit the nets as Towson ran its record to 5-0.
Towson took a 3-0 lead after 15 minutes, but it was the second quarter that inflicted the greatest damage to UMBC. The Retrievers lost five of seven draws, committed six turnovers and were outshot, 16-2, as the Tigers outscored UMBC, 6-0, in the stanza and took a 9-0 lead into the locker room.
In the third, the hosts extended the margin to 12-0, but UMBC (0-3) produced a flurry of goals, scoring four times in 3:57 and controlled the ensuing draw to force a Tiger time out. Maxwell got the Retrievers on the board, scoring from close range after a deft pass from freshman midfielder Pat Clipp (Ellicott City, Md./Marriotts Ridge) at the 5:39 mark of the quarter. Baker collected his first collegiate goal just 49 seconds later and Borsody tallied his first of the season 56 seconds after the Baker tally.
Baker capped the run by putting a hard drive form the right alley past TU netminder Tyler White with 6:24 to play in the third. Moments later, UMBC would get a chance to extend the rally with a man-up chance, but turned the ball over and Towson scored with two ticks left in the stanza to halt the momentum.
Clipp registered a pair of assists for UMBC in his third collegiate game and freshman LSDM Jason Brewster (San Diego, Calif.) captured four ground balls and won a team-best four (of nine) draws. UMBC played the game without senior attackman Nate Lewnes (Arnold, Md./St. Mary's), the team's leading active scorer, for the second consecutive week.
Gannon now has three career games with four assists and has amassed 37 goals and 37 assists in 40 career outings.
UMBC returns home for another non-conference contest on Saturday, March 12, when they host Marist at noon.
