Box Score Baltimore, Md.— UMBC women's basketball fell 72-38 to Maine on Saturday at the RAC. The Black Bears held UMBC to just 27% shooting, while giving up just 17 second half points. Junior Taylor McCarley (Bowie, Md./Academy of Holy Cross) led the way with 14 points as the Retrievers fall to 13-10, 4-6 AE on the year.
Maine took control of the first quarter early, scoring the first four points of the stanza. Senior Liz McNaughton (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax) got the Retrievers on the board with a pair of free throws four minutes in. From there, however, the Black Bears were in control, jumping ahead 18-7 late and leading 22-10 after one.
Quarter two saw the Retriever defense start to ramp up, holding Maine to just six points early on. UMBC got a pair of buckets from Amanda Hagaman (Manasquan, N.J./Manasquan) and Capree Garner (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook) to cut the deficit to eight, but a big three from Sigi Koziar pushed the Black Bears in front 31-18 at the half.
Taylor McCarley led the Retrievers in the first half with five points and two rebounds as UMBC shot just 22.2% from the field.
Maine came out the gates in the third, outscoring UMBC 17-6 in the stanza. McCarley scored all six points, giving her 11 for the game, as the Black Bears led 48-24 after three.
The story was much of the same in the final quarter, as Maine out-scored the Retrievers, holding them to under ten points in the quarter in a 72-38 win.
McCarley led the way with 14 points, adding three rebounds. Marissa Somerville (Loveville, Md./St. Mary's Ryken), and Amanda Hagaman each had four, while Carly Harris (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler Area) had career-high four points.
The Retrievers are back on the road on Thursday, Feb. 11 with a 7 p.m. tilt with Stony Brook.
