Box Score

Columbus, Ohio – Host Ohio State took control midway through the second quarter, holding UMBC scoreless for nearly 27 minutes and defeating the Retrievers, 12-7, at legendary Ohio Stadium.

Three freshmen led the Retriever attack, as freshman midfielder Billy Nolan (Crofton, Md./Arundel) tallied two goals and one assist, first-year attackman Pat Brennan (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) posted a goal and two helpers and freshman middie Pat Clipp (Ellicott City, Md./Marriotts Ridge) recorded a pair of goals.

For the first time in his UMBC career, senior attackman Nate Lewnes (Arnold, Md./St. Mary's) did not see action. Lewnes, who started all 44 games in his tenure and has 99 career points, missed the contest due to injury.

The Retrievers took an early lead just 1:20 into the contest as freshman midfielder Billy Nolan took a pass from Brennan, came out front and beat OSU netminder Tom Carey from close range. After the Buckeyes tied the game, senior midfielder Jack Gannon (Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) stepped into a shot from the left side and restored a one goal lead for the visitors with 5:24 to play in the first quarter.

Ohio State (3-1) would even the game at 2-apiece, then outscored the Retrievers, 3-1, in the second quarter to take a 6-3 lead into halftime.

The Buckeyes extended the run to 6-0, holding UMBC off the board in the third quarter and taking a 9-3 advantage after 45 minutes. Brennan ended the drought just 1:36 into the fourth quarter, battling hard for a ground ball after a scrum in front and scoring from close range.

Clipp and junior attackman Max Maxwell (Hamburg, N.Y.) added fourth quarter goals for the Retrievers. Maxwell and Gannon each recorded a goal and an assist.

Ohio State's Colin Chell posted his squad's first three goals and was the lone three-goal scorer in the contest.

UMBC netminder Connor Gordon (Bourne, Mass.) made seven of his eight saves in the first half. The Buckeyes outshot the Retrievers, 41-16, and captured 14 of 23 draws.

UMBC (0-2) makes the short journey to Towson for a contest with No. 13 Towson on Saturday, March 5. A 1 p.m. face-off is slated for Johnny Unitas Stadium.
