BALTIMORE, Md. – The UMBC baseball team dropped both games of its America East opening doubleheader with defending league champion Maine, Friday afternoon at the Baseball Factory Field at UMBC.
In game one, senior Max Himmelstein (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) hit a bases clearing double in the third to give the Retrievers a 3-2 lead. Himmelstein went 3-for-4 in the game to go with his three RBIs. Maine regrouped quickly though, scoring seven runs in the next four innings to take the game 9-3.
Freshman Ian Glassman (Basking Ridge, N.J./Rutgers Prep) also picked up three hits for UMBC in the loss.
Maine took the lead in the top of the third inning, plating two runs against UMBC starter Steve Miller (Newark, Del./Dickinson). The senior went 4.1 innings but gave up six runs to take the loss and fall to 0-5 this season.
In the bottom half of the inning, freshman Vince Corbi (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) started the Retrievers' rally with a single through the left side of the infield. He advanced to third quickly as the next two batters, Glassman and senior Curtis Schickner (East Windsor, N.J./Lawrenceville Prep) lined back-to-back singles to load the bases. Himmelstein then stepped up and promptly roped a double to clear the bases and give the hosts the lead.
The Black Bears responded immediately however, plating two runs in the top of the fourth to retake the lead, 4-3. They added three more in the fifth and a run each in the sixth and seventh to provide the final margin.
Sophomore Alex Calbick led the Black Bears going 2-for-3 with a three-run homerun in the fifth inning to break open the game.
In the second game of the day, Maine took advantage of 11 UMBC errors and scored in every inning en route to a 32-14 victory. Maine's 32 runs breaks the America East record for runs in a game. The previous record was 26 set by three teams (Delaware 4/9/93; Binghamton 5/1/10; Stony Brook 5/8/10).
The two teams combined for 46 runs and 42 hits in the game.
The Black Bears scored seven runs in the first and added eight in the sixth inning for their biggest innings of the day. The Retrievers responded with six runs of their own in the bottom half of the sixth.
Himmelstein hit his fifth homerun of the year, a three-run shot to lead UMBC. Junior Jason Allinder (Snow Hill, Md./Snow Hill/Chesapeake CC) and Corbi each picked up three hits to lead a group of six Retrievers with multi-hit games.
UMBC and Maine come back on Saturday to play two more games to finish the four-game series. First pitch is set for 12 p.m.
