FARMVILLE, Va. – UMBC baseball senior Brian Klukowicz (Clifton, N.J./St. Peter's Prep) went 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored, but it was not enough as Longwood defeated the Retrievers,  5-2, Sunday afternoon to complete the three-game sweep at Bolding Stadium.  Longwood has now taken five of the last six meetings between the two schools.

Klukowicz hit .600 (6-for-10) in the three-game series, connecting for two doubles and scoring two runs.

Longwood struck early once again on Sunday, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first off of sophomore Shane Vlasic (Ashburn, Va./Broad Run).  The right-hander settled down after that, but was still charged with the loss (2-3) after giving up five runs on 11 hits in 5.2 innings of work.

Using four pitchers on Sunday, Longwood successfully shut down the Retriever offense.  Starter Bobby Shelton (1-1) earned the win for the Lancers, throwing three innings of scoreless ball while giving up only one hit and issuing one walk.

Four Longwood hitters picked up multi-hit games including leadoff hitter Robby Newman who went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored on Sunday.  His RBI single in the fourth inning extended the Lancers' lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the fourth.

UMBC got on the board in the top of the sixth when Klukowicz came home on a sacrifice fly to center off the bat of junior Tom Gilchrist (Olney, Md./Sherwood/Chesapeake CC).  The hosts answered right back in the bottom half of the inning however, scoring two runs to push the lead back to four, 5-1. 

The Retrievers rallied in the top of the eighth as Klukowicz and junior Jason Allinder (Snow Hill, Md./Snow Hill/Chesapeake CC) led off with back-to-back singles.  Klukowicz came home on the next batter, as sophomore Rob McCabe (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Joseph's Prep) hit into a fielder's choice and the Longwood shortstop was charged with a throwing error.  After freshman Vince Corbi(Medford, N.J./Shawnee) singled to give UMBC runners on first and second with one out, the Lancers ended the inning by turning a double play as McCabe attempted to score on a fly ball to right.

UMBC continues its road swing on Tuesday when the Black and Gold travel to the nation's capital to take on Georgetown.  First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.  The Retrievers and Hoyas have already met twice this season with Georgetown claiming both games at the season-opening Wake Forest Invitational in Winston Salem, N.C.

-           Senior Max Himmelstein (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) went 0-for-5 on Sunday, snapping his 11-game hit streak.

-          Klukowicz is now batting .442 (23-for-52) in 13 games this season.  He was reached base by a hit in 12 of the 13 games.

-          After not drawing a walk in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader, the Retrievers earned six free passes on Sunday.
