FARMVILLE, Va. – The UMBC baseball team dropped both games of a day-night doubleheader at Longwood on Saturday at Bolding Stadium.
The Lancers took the first game, 15-4, before holding on and escaping with a seven-inning, 3-1 win in the night cap.
Senior Luke DiBlasi (Pleasant Valley, N.Y./Arlington) (0-2) took the loss of the Retrievers in the opener after giving up seven runs on nine hits in two innings of work.
Kyler Morgan evened his record at 3-3 for Longwood after throwing 7.1 innings and yielding only two earned runs while scattering six hits.
UMBC struck first with leadoff hitter Ian Glassman (Basking Ridge, N.J./Rutgers Prep) starting the game with a single up the middle. After moving to second on a sacrifice bunt, Glassman came into score on an RBI single to right center by senior Max Himmelstein (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown).
The hosts came back immediately however, scoring two runs in the bottom half of the frame and taking the lead on an RBI single by Matt Gwaltney.
Longwood extended the lead in the bottom of the second, scoring five runs to push the lead to six, 7-1, following an RBI single to center off the bat of Brandon Delk.
UMBC got two runs back in the top of third when Glassman and classmate Vince Corbi (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) came around to score on an error and cut the lead to 7-3.
Longwood scored once in the bottom of the fifth and UMBC answered with one in the top of the eighth to make the score 8-4. The Lancers then exploded for a seven-run eighth inning to put the game away.
In game two, Longwood scored single runs in the first, third and fourth innings while UMBC could only respond with one in the top of the seventh as the hosts pulled out a 3-1 win.
Senior Steve Miller (Newark, Del./Dickinson) gave up all three runs over five innings of work to take the loss for the Retrievers. The right-hander (0-4) struck out four batters while only issuing one walk.
Zach Jordan (2-2) earned the win for Longwood despite only pitching four innings.
After his 11-game hit streak was broken in game one, senior Brian Klukowicz (Clifton, N.J./St. Peter's Prep) went 3-for-4 in the second game while driving in UMBC's only run.
UMBC and Longwood complete their three-game set with the series finale on Sunday. First pitch between the Retrievers and Lancers is scheduled for 12 p.m.
DAWG BITES
- Although his hit streak was broken, Klukowicz is batting .417 (20-for-48) this season with two homeruns and a team-best 16 RBIs
- With hits in each of the two games, Himmelstein now owns the team's longest hitting streak at 11 games.
- UMBC did not earn a walk in game two on Saturday, the first time the Retrievers have not drawn a walk this year.
