Women's Basketball Falls to Stony Brook, 74-56

BALTIMORE—The UMBC women's basketball team (9-12, 3-5 AE) dropped a 74-56 decision to America East rival Stony Brook (6-14, 4-4 AE) Thursday evening at the RAC Arena.

Sophomore guard Michelle Kurowski (Hicksville, N.Y./Hicksville) scored all of her team-high 13 points in the second half to earn UMBC's America East Player of the Game honors, while senior guard Carlee Cassidy (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) drained three 3-pointers and finished with 12 points. She became the 30th player in America East history to amass 1,500 points and now has 1,508 in her career.

The Seawolves led from the start, jumping out to a 17-7 lead at the 13:24 mark of the first half. A 3-pointer by sophomore forward Erin Brown (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) sparked an 8-2 UMBC run that sliced the margin to four points, 19-15, with 9:51 to go, but Stony Brook used an 18-3 spurt to break the game open. The Seawolves led, 42-26 at halftime.

The Retrievers appeared to have the momentum at the start of the second stanza, cutting their deficit to 12 points, 45-33, after just three minutes of play, but they could get no closer.

Stony Brook dominated on the glass, outrebounding UMBC, 51-35, and scoring 16 points off 18 offensive rebounds.

Stony Brook forward Kirsten Jeter was named her team's America East Player of the Game with a double-double of 24 points and 12 rebounds, both game highs. She added four assists and buried four 3-pointers.

UMBC sophomore center Topé Obajolu (Randallstown, Md./Archbishop Carroll) pulled down seven rebounds and tied her career high with four blocks to go along with nine points.

The Retrievers return to action on Tuesday, Feb. 2, when they travel to league-leading Hartford.
