STONY BROOK, N.Y.—Junior guard Chantay Frazier and sophomore guard Carlee Cassidy combined to score 35 of UMBC's 38 second-half points to lead the Retrievers (8-15, 4-6 AEC) past America East rival Stony Brook (6-17, 1-9 AEC) by a score of 62-49 in women's basketball action Wednesday evening at Stony Brook Arena. The Retrievers completed their first-ever season sweep of the Seawolves and have won back-to-back games for the first time since early December.
Frazier led all scorers with a career-high 26 points in the game, including 24 in the second half, while Cassidy scored 11 of her 18 points in the second period.
Stony Brook forward Dana Ferraro scored 10 of the Seawolves' first 16 points, leading Stony Brook to a 16-10 lead after 11:39 of play.
The Retrievers used a 10-0 run over the next six and a half minutes to take a 20-16 lead, but the Seawolves answered back with an 8-2 spurt of their own to regain the advantage, 23-22.
A jumper by senior center Amanda Robinson put UMBC back on top, 24-23, with 2:01 left in the half, but Stony Brook scored the final seven points of the period to take a 30-24 halftime lead.
The Retrievers came out shooting in the second half, using an 8-0 run to take a 32-30 lead, and they never looked back. UMBC extended the scoring spurt to 15-2 with 11 points by Frazier, pushing the advantage to 40-32.
Stony Brook, meanwhile, missed their first six shots of the second period and made just one of their first 12.
But a Kirsten Jeter jumper at 12:37 sparked a 6-0 Stony Brook run that cut the Retrievers' lead to just two points, 40-38, with 10:27 remaining. UMBC answered right back with an 18-3 run that gave the Retrievers a game-high 17-point lead, 58-41, with 2:02 left. Frazier scored another 11 points during that stretch.
Frazier added nine rebounds and three steals to go along with her 26 points, which came on 10-of-16 shooting. Freshman point guard Michele Brokans did not score but pulled down seven rebounds and dished out four assists while not turning the ball over in 40 minutes.
Jeter led Stony Brook with 15 points, while Ferraro posted a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds, but she had 10 points and nine rebounds in the first half.
The Retrievers shot 48.1 percent in the second half and 41.1 percent in the game while holding the Seawolves to just 33.3 percent from the floor, including 21.9 percent in the second period.
UMBC held a 40-38 rebounding edge and committed just three turnovers in the second half.
The Retrievers return to action on Saturday, Feb. 16, when they take on America East rival Binghamton at the BU Events Center.
