Baltimore, Md. - Despite career-high nights by freshmen Sharri Rohde (Indianapolis, Ind./Franklin Central) and Courtney Doughman (Ironton, Ohio/South Webster), the UMBC Retrievers (0-9) women's basketball team lost to cross-town rival Loyola (5-6), 72-50, in the Retrievers final non-conference game of the 2003-04 season. Rohde weighed in with 17 points on 5-of-9 shooting and 3-of-6 from three point range while Doughman chipped in 12 off the bench on 4-of-9 shooting from the field as all four baskets were treys.
While the Retriever rookies did have career-high nights, the Retrievers gave way to 52.6 percent shooting from the field by the Greyhounds as Loyola hit 59.3 percent (16-of-27) in the first half to jump out to a 38-26 lead at the break.
The Greyhounds opened the game with a 20-3 run, holding a 17 points advantage with 11:48 to play in the first half. UMBC fought back to within eight as Mariana Santos (Presidente, Brazil/Americana), who had 12 points on the night, hit a three at the 1:42 mark to make it a 32-24 game. That would be the closest UMBC would get as Greyhounds took the game back to double-digits on back-to-back free throws by Katie Scherle.
The Greyhounds continued to send the ball inside on the Retrievers in the second half as their lead grew to as many as 24. Leading the way was Lauren Troupe for the Greyhounds with 15 points and eight boards. Scherle added 12 points and Krystle Harrrington recorded 11 to put three greyhounds in double-figures.
The Retrievers return to action when they host their first America East Conference opponent on Wednesday, Jan 7 at 7 p.m. as Stony Brook University will visit UMBC RAC Arena.
