Baseball Hosts Coppin State on Tuesday Afternoon

BALTIMORE -- The UMBC Baseball team will look to continue its winning streak when it hosts local rival Coppin State on Tuesday afternoon at 3 p.m.

The Retrievers ran their winning streak to seven on Sunday when they completed the three game sweep of America East preseason favorite Binghamton.

UMBC (9-11, 3-0 AE) jumped out to an early 9-0 lead, and then held off a furious Binghamton rally to complete the three-game America East sweep with an 11-8 win on Sunday at Alumni Field.

Danny Wyatt had three doubles and two RBI, Justin Taylor and Matt Ryan each homered and drove in two, while Kyle Eddington also drove in a pair in the victory.

Logan Wiley entered with two runners in scoring position and two outs in the fifth and immediately got a strikeout to end the threat and keep the Dawgs up 9-5. Wiley would pitch the rest of the game, striking out six to pick up the win and go to 3-1.

How it Happened:
  • Anthony Swenda singled to left in the first, and scored on Ryan's two-out two-run homer in the first
  • UMBC made it 3-0 in the second when Wyatt doubled with one out, moved to third on an Eddington single and scored on an RBI ground out by Derek Paris.
  • Taylor smacked a leadoff homer in the third to make it 4-0, and after a pair of walks, Matthew Best greeted the new pitcher with an RBI double that made it 5-0.
  • Wyatt followed with a two-run double to extend the the lead to 7-0, and he would eventually score on an Eddington sacrifice fly
  • The lead grew to 9-0 in the fourth when Luke Trythall drove in Swenda on an RBI single
  • The Bearcats would not go quietly however, putting up five in the top of the fifth, and two more in the sixth to cut the Retrievers lead to 9-7
  • After Wiley worked a perfect top of the seventh, Eddington walked and would later score on a Taylor RBI single to give UMBC a 10-7 lead
  • Wiley once again worked a three up, three down inning in the eighth, and the Dawgs added another insurance run in the bottom half of the inning when Wyatt doubled for the third time and would later score on another Eddington sacrifice fly
  • BU got one back in the ninth, but Wiley shut the door to complete the sweep
Scouting Coppin State:
  • The game begins a 13-game road trip for the Eagles
  • Behind impressive pitches performances from starters Alek Elges and Kaden Straily as well as relievers Clay Thompson and Liam McCallum, the Coppin State baseball team swept a NEC doubleheader from Delaware State on Sunday afternoon at Joe Canon Stadium.  The Eagles (5-12, 4-5 NEC) took the opener, 4-3, and the nightcap, 7-2 to win the series from the Hornets (4-14, 3-6 NEC) and move into sixth play in the conference standings
