The UMBC Women's Basketball team returns from a 12-day break for finals when it travels to George Mason for a 2 p.m. game on Friday.
The Retrievers enter the contest on a three-game winning streak, and are being led byÂ
Jaden Walker, who was named the America East Player of the Week last Monday.Â
Walker averaged 14 points (on 58% shooting) and 10.5 rebounds per game in a 2-0 week, including a 15 point, 13 rebound performance at Saint Francis on 12/8. She had 13 points and 8 rebounds in the upset at CAA power Towson on 12/4, the first UMBC win over Towson since 2010.
Against SFU, she tied a career high in both points (15) and rebounds (13) in the 61-45 triumph, a win that gave UMBC (6-4) five Division 1 non-conference wins this season, it's most since 2015.
Jaliena Sanchez had 13 points, five rebounds, three steals and an assist,Â
Jordon Lewis added 10 points and eight rebounds,Â
Carmen Yánez had a game-best six assists in the winning effort.
Tiara Bellamy,Â
Laura Lacambra andÂ
Lauren Thompson had six points each off the bench.Â
George Mason topped the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks in a Saturday afternoon matchup, 61-40, to move to 10-1 for the first time in program history. The only loss GMU has suffered was a 66-56 neutral site loss to #8 Maryland. The Patriots had a fourth quarter lead of that contest.Â
Â
Against UMES, tt was a slow start from both teams as no one scored for the first 3:10 of the game. SophomoreÂ
Kennedy Harris finally broke with a three-pointer, which she then hit again just a minutes later from the same spot. Harris scored the first 10 points of the game, and the Patriots held the Hawks scoreless in the first quarter.
Â
By halftime, the Hawks had scored eight points, tying the Patriots' record for fewest points by an opponent in a half. For the Green & Gold, Harris and fellow sophomoreÂ
Louis Volker were driving the score up. Volker had 12 at the half and Harris had 10.
Â
With a comfortable lead in hand, the Patriots looked to their bench for some minutes. 11 players tallied double-digit minutes in this game. When the final buzzer sounded, the Green & Gold celebrated their best start in program history.Â
Louis Volker tied a career-high 14 points in 19 minutes of play, shooting 50% from the floor, whileÂ
Kennedy Harris finished with 13 points in 20 minutes of play, including 3-4 from three and 4-4 from the free throw line. The Patriots held the Hawks scoreless in the first quarter, and forced the visitors into 28 turnovers.
