Women's Basketball Begins Road-Swing at NJIT on Wednesday

The UMBC Women's Basketball team looks to improve its playoff seeding when it hits the road for two critical America East contests, begriming Wednesday night at NJIT. Fans can watch the action on ESPN+ at 7 p.m. The Retrievers then head to Rhode Island to face Bryant on Saturday afternoon.

Last Time Out:
  • Kiara Bell (Santa Rosa, Calif.) tallied another double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds, Ashia McCalla (Greenbelt, Md.) added 16 points and the UMBC Women's Basketball team held an astonishing 28-3 advantage in points off turnovers to blow out previously first place Maine, 74-57, on Saturday at The Peake.
  • The Retrievers improved to 10-12 and 7-4 in the America East, while the Black Bears win streak was halted at four and they dropped to 12-10 and 8-2 in the America East.
  • UMBC held a 46-22 advantage in points in the paint, outscored Maine 15-0 on fast breaks, and the bench outpaced the visitors bench, 16-2.
Scouting NJIT:
  • NJIT senior Kenna Squier registered her third double-double of her career, netting a game-best 22 points and 10 rebounds, leading the Highlanders to a 68-50 home victory over UMass Lowell Saturday afternoon in America East Conference action inside NJIT's Wellness and Events Center
  • NJIT, winners of two in a row, improve to 6-4 in the America East, 11-11 overall 
  • Squier, who scored only four points in the first half, poured in 18 second-half points, shooting 7-for-10 from the field, a perfect 6-of-6 from the free throw line and 2-for-2 from three-point range.  Her 10 rebounds were a game-best as the Highlanders out-rebounded the River Hawks, 37-to-20.
  • On Monday, Squier was named America East Player of the Week

  • The series is tied, 2-2, after the Retrievers won two weeks ago.
  • Sophomore guard Laycee Drake's 23-foot, one-footed jumper with 0.2 seconds remaining gave the Retrievers a thrilling 61-60 victory over NJIT at The Peake on 1/25/23.
  • Drake's shot earned the number one spot on SportCenter's Top 10 on Wednesday night.
  • Drake was one of three Retrievers in double figures, scoring 15 points, one shy of her career best.
  • Graduate students KK White (16) and Ashia McCalla (14) also posted double figures.
  • NJIT outrebounded UMBC 31-29, making it the first game all season that the Retrievers won when being outrebounded (1-8)
