Men's Hoops Continues Road Trip at New Hampshire On Saturday Afternoon

LAST TIME OUT - UMBC DROPS ROAD CONTEST AGAINST UALBANY
- Junior guard Matteo Picarelli scored a career-high 24 points but the visiting UMBC Retrievers dropped an 81-74 decision against the UAlbany Great Danes, Wednesday evening at McDonough Field House on the campus of Hudson Valley Community College.
 - UMBC (17-11, 7-6 America East) lost their fifth straight road league contest while UAlbany (7-21, 2-11 AE) stopped a nine-game losing streak.
 -Freshman center Jonathan Beagle recorded a double-double of 16 points and a game-high 15 rebounds to pace the hosts.
-The Retrievers shot just 35 percent overall (21-of-59) and were 6-of-25 (24 percent) from behind the arc.  The -Great Danes finished at 46 percent overall (29-of-63) and made 10-of-30 (33.3 percent) attempts from distance.
- UAlbany also outrebounded the Retrievers by a 41-32 margin.
 
Notes
- UMBC hit 26-of-27 free throws for a 96.3 percent clip, the second-most free throws by a conference team this season.
- Picarelli, who made his second start of the season, went 7-of-16 overall from the floor, swished 5-of-14 treys and was 5-for-5 from the charity stripe. It was the third time this season that he's reached 20 or more points.
- Graduate student Craig Beaudion II was the only other Retriever in double-figures as the guard scored 14 points and added a game-high six assists. Beaudion went 10-for-10 from the line, tying his career-best in made free throws. He also went over the 700-point mark in his career.
- Graduate student forward Tra'Von Fagan led UMBC with 10 rebounds, the third time this season that he's reached double-figures in the category.
- Brown added eight points and six rebounds in 24 minutes off the bench. Brown played in front of a large contingent of family and friends who made the trip from his native Great Barrington, Massachusetts.
-The Retrievers are now tied for fourth with Bryant in the conference standings with three games remaining.
 
ABOUT NEW HAMPSHIRE
- The Wildcats have lost three straight contests and are sixth in the AE standings.
- New Hampshire is last in the league in scoring (66.6 pg.) but are second in points allowed (66.6 pg.).
- The Wildcats are the third-best rebounding team in the league (37.0 pg.).
- Clarence Daniels is third in the league in scoring at 15.3 pg. and leads the circuit in rebounding (10.7 pg.).
- Kyree Brown is second in the league with 4.1 assists per game .
 
SERIES HISTORY
- UMBC has won 10 of their last 12 contests against the Wildcats.
- UMBC senior wing Jacob Boonyasith led four Retrievers in double-figures with 14 points as UMBC bested the Wildcats, 80-69, at "The Peake" on January 21.

- UMBC senior wing Jacob Boonyasith led four Retrievers in double-figures with 14 points as the host Retrievers defeated the New Hampshire Wildcats, 80-69, in an America East Conference contest at the Chesapeake Employers Arena on Saturday afternoon.
 - UMBC, who scored 50 points in the opening half and led by as many as 21 points midway through the second half, also received double-figures in scoring from freshman guard Dion Brown (13 points, 5 rebounds), graduate student guard Colton Lawrence (13 points), and graduate student forward Tra'Von Fagan. 
-New Hampshire was led by junior forward Clarence Daniels, who produced game-highs of 18 points and 13 rebounds.
 
HOME SWEET HOME
- UMBC is 24-6 under Head Coach Jim Ferry over the past two seasons at "The Peake".
-The Retrievers are 81-26 (.757) in Baltimore over the past seven seasons.
 
DOG BITES
-UMBC picked up their program-record 10th non-conference regular-season victory versus Hartford.
Freshman guard Dion Brown was named the America East Rookie of the Week for the second time on Monday, Feb. 6.
-UMBC converted a season-best 26-of-27 free throws at UAlbany
-The Retrievers are 46th in the country in free throw percentage (75.3)
- UMBC is 17-4 when they shoot 40 percent or higher. The four losses all came on the road (UNC Greensboro, UMass Lowell, NJIT and Vermont).
- The Retrievers are 15-1 when they outshoot their opponent. The only defeat came at UMass Lowell.
- The Dawgs are 11-1 when they hold opponents under 70 points. The lone loss came at NJIT.
- Senior forward Yaw Obeng-Mensah is 4th in the AE with a .548 field goal percentage  (57-of-104) in conference games.
- Obeng-Mensah drew a UMBC season-high 11 fouls at Vermont.
- UMBC is a combined 63-of-77 (82 percent) from the foul line in the final four minutes this season.
- Graduate student guard Craig Beaudion II is second in the AE with 4.7 assists per game in conference games. He's also 2nd with a 3.4 assists/turnover ratio.
- UMBC is now 24-6 under Jim Ferry at home over the past two seasons.
 
PICARELLI SETS NEW CAREER HIGH  
- Junior guard Matteo Picarelli has reached 20 or more points on three different occasions this season. He produced a new career-best 24 points and hit five treys at UAlbany on Wednesday evening. Picarelli is averaging 22.0 minutes per game this season after playing just 8.6 mpg. in 21-22.  Picarelli is 4th in the AE in 3-point field goal percentage (.400). He's also fourth in the league in 3-pointers per game (2.2)
 
BOMBS AWAY
-The Retrievers swished 17 triples for the 5th time in program history at UNCG (11/22/22).  UMBC attempted 37 treys, just six shy of their all-time single-game mark.
-The squad then broke the record with 21 bombs in their blowout victory over Coppin State. The Retrievers attempted 40 shots from distance in the contest.
-The 21 3s are tied for the 5th most in the country this season.
-UMBC ranks 65th in the country with 8.5 3's made per game and 77th in attempts per game at 24.1.
-On the flip side, UMBC is 341 out of 352 in 3-point field goal percentage defense (37.9 percent).
 
TAKING CARE OF THE BALL
- UMBC ranks 17th in the country with a 1.46 assists/turnover ratio.
- UMBC is 15th in the country in fewest turnovers per game (10.2).
- UMBC committed a season-low 5 miscues at Bryant.
- Starting point guard Craig Beaudion II is 10th in in the country in assists/turnover ratio and leads the AE (3.0).
- UMBC is 12-6 win they win the turnover battle.
 
BENCH MOB
-UMBC's bench ranks 23rd in the country with 26.8 ppg.
-Matteo Picarelli leads the charge at 10.5 ppg. along with Tra'Von Fagan (7.7) and Dion Brown (7.6).
 
THAT 70'S SHOW
-The Retrievers scored 70 or more points in 10 straight before the 64-point output at Maryland. It was the first time they had hit the mark 10 straight times since the 2000-01 season.
-They are 14-4 when they score 70+ this season.
-The Retrievers are 95th in the country in scoring offense at 75.2 ppg.
 
A PROGRAM ON THR RISE     
-UMBC is enjoying their best stretch in program history as the Retrievers have gone a combined 139-87 (.615) over the past seven seasons. UMBC enjoyed three straight 20+ win seasons from 2016-17 to 2018-19. Their 25 victories in 2017-18 was a program high.
