Men's Basketball Set to Hosts Bryant Saturday on Alumni Day

LAST TIME OUT - BIG SECOND HALF LIFTS UMBC OVER NJIT

- The host UMBC Retrievers reversed a 16-point first half deficit and went on to defeat the NJIT Highlanders, 72-63, in an America East Conference contest at the Chesapeake Employers Arena on Wednesday evening.
 - UMBC  junior guard Matteo Picarelli (5-of-7 treys) matched his career-high with a game-high 21 points and graduate student forward Tra'Von Fagan recorded his second double-double of the season with 18 points along with a team-high 12 rebounds. Graduate student guard Colton Lawrence chipped in with 15 points.
Notes
- UMBC shot 53.8 percent (14-of-26) in the second half after going just 11-of-29 (37.9 percent) in the first stanza.
- The Retrievers held NJIT to a 30.3 shooting clip in the second half as they made only 10-of-33 attempts.
- UMBC's bench outscored the visitors reserves by a 43-13 margin.
-  UMBC is now 12-2 at home this season.
-  NJIT won the first contest, 69-65, in Newark, NJ.
- Fagan's seven field goals were a career-best.
 
ABOUT BRYANT
- Bryant has won three straight contests and are tied for second in the AE standings with UMass Lowell.
- The Bulldogs lead the league in scoring (82.0 ppg.), 3-point field goals per game (8.7), free throw percentage (.762) and defensive rebounds per game (29.0).
- Bryant boasts four of the top-ten scorers in the league. Sherif Gross-Bullock leads the conference in the category at 16.7 ppg. Charles Pride (15.5 pg.), Antwan Walker (13.7 pg.) and Earl Timberlake (13.5 pg.) are the others.
- Timberlake is also third on the circuit with 8.6 rebounds per game while Walker is adding 7.2 caroms and is 5th.
 
SERIES HISTORY

- UMBC holds a 2-0 advantage in the all-time series.
- The Dawgs defeated Bryant, 81-73, this past January 8th in Smithfield, Rhode Island.
- The Retrievers defeated the Bulldogs, 71-69, during the 1980-81 season in the UMBC Gino's Classic.
 
LAST MEETING
- The visiting UMBC Retrievers delivered some clutch shots down the stretch and held on for a big, 81-73, America East Conference victory over the Bryant Bulldogs at the Chase Athletic Center on Jan. 8th.
- UMBC graduate student guard Colton Lawrence scored a game-high 19 points and senior wing Jacob - Boonyasith added all 15 of his points in the second half to pace the Retrievers on the offensive end. Graduate student forward Tra'Von Fagan chipped in with 12 points and a team-high nine rebounds while freshman guard Dion Brown had 11 points.
- Bryant was led by conference leading scorer Sherif Gross-Bullock's 18 points while Antwan Walker recorded 17 points and 11 boards.
 
 DOG BITES
- UMBC picked up their program-record 10th non-conference regular-season victory versus Hartford.
-Freshman guard Dion Brown was named the America East Rookie of the Week for the second time this past Monday.
- UMBC is 16-4 when they shoot 40 percent or higher. The four losses all came on the road (UNC Greensboro, UMass Lowell, NJIT and Vermont).
- The Retrievers are 15-1 when they outshoot their opponent. The only defeat came at UMass Lowell.
- The Dawgs are 11-1 when they hold opponents under 70 points. The lone loss came at NJIT.
- Senior forward Yaw Obeng-Mensah leads the AE with a .568 field goal percentage  (50-of-88) in conference games.
- Obeng-Mensah drew a UMBC season-high 11 fouls at Vermont.
- UMBC is a combined 55-of-65 (85 percent) from the foul line in the final four minutes this season.
- Graduate student guard Craig Beaudion II is third in the AE with 4.3 assists per game in conference games. He's also third with a 3.1 assists/turnover ratio.
- Beaudion has a team-high 13 steals and seven blocks in AE contests.
 
 BOMBS AWAY
- The Retrievers swished 17 triples for the 5th time in program history at UNCG (11/22/22).  UMBC attempted 37 treys, just six shy of their all-time single-game mark.
- The squad then broke the record with 21 bombs in their blowout victory over Coppin State. The Retrievers attempted 40 shots from distance in the contest.
- The 21 3s are tied for the 5th most in the country this season.
- UMBC ranks 61st in the country with 8.6 3's made per game and 77th in attempts per game at 24.1.
- On the flip side, UMBC is 341 out of 352 in 3-point field goal percentage defense (38.1 percent).
 
TAKING CARE OF THE BALL
-UMBC ranks 18th in the country with a 1.43 assists/turnover ratio.
-The Retrievers are 15th in the country in fewest turnovers per game (10.4).
-UMBC committed a season-low 5 miscues at Bryant.
-Starting point guard Craig Beaudion II is 25th in the country in assists/turnover ratio and is 2nd in the AE (2.73).
-UMBC is 11-5 win they win the turnover battle.
 
BENCH MOB
- UMBC's bench ranks 29th in the country with 26.6 ppg.
- Matteo Picarelli leads the charge at 10.2 ppg. along with Tra'Von Fagan (7.7) and Dion Brown (7.6).
 
THAT 70'S SHOW
- The Retrievers scored 70 or more points in 10 straight before the 64-point output at Maryland. It was the first time they had hit the mark 10 straight times since the 2000-01 season. They are 13-3 when they score 70+ this season.
- The Retrievers are 94th in the country in scoring offense at 75.3 ppg.
