The UMBC Women's Basketball team will open the home portion of its 2023-24 schedule when it hosts Gettysburg on Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
Last night, Jordon Lewis scored a career-high 24 points in her UMBC debut, and sophomore Carmen Yánez added a career-best 12 points, but CAA favorite Towson scored the final four points of the game to defeat visiting UMBC, 76-72, at TU Arena.
Lewis shot 7-8 from the field, including 2-2 from three, and was also 8-9 at the free throw line, while Anna Blount added 13 points and eight rebounds in her Retriever debut.
UMBC battled back from a late seven point deficit, and briefly took a 70-69 lead on a pair of Paloma Iradier free throws with 1:42 left, but the hosts would hit a three moments later to regain the lead. The Retrievers shot 48.9% from the field (23-47), including a blistering 55.6% (5-9) from three
Scouting Gettysburg:
- Last season, Gettysburg went 21-7 and won its second-straight, and fourth-ever, Centennial Conference title.
- Gettysburg is made its 10th NCAA tournament appearance and its fifth straight
- Mackenzie Szlosek was named a Women's Basketball Coaches' Association (WBCA) honorable mention All-American
- Szlosek, the Centennial Conference (CC) Player of the Year and first-team all-conference selection, was also named first-team all-region by D3hoops.com
- She reached double digits in the scoring column 23 times on the season, with four 20-point outings, and had five double-doubles
UMBC leads the all-time series, 8-2, and has won six in a row (all since 2016). Last season, Ashia McCalla hit a short jumper with nine seconds left to give the Retrievers a hard-fought 79-77 victory over Gettysburg before a boisterous crowd in the opener at Chesapeake Arena.
Four Retrievers finished in double figures, led by graduate student forward Kiara Bell, who scored 18 points and added eight rebounds. Grad student guard KK White added 16 points, while Scoop Smith and McCalla tallied 12 apiece. Smith added nine rebounds.
