Women's Basketball Hosts Lafayette on Wednesday

The UMBC Women's Basketball returns to The Peake for the first time in two weeks when it hosts Lafayette on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. on ESPN+.

Last time out, a Jordon Lewis three-point play with 7:33 left cut the UMBC deficit to 51-48, but host Maryland Eastern Shore would score 19 of the next 25 points en route to a 70-54 victory over the visiting Retrievers on Sunday afternoon.

Anna Blount led the way for UMBC (1-5) with 13 points and seven rebounds, while Jaden Walker had a season-best 11 points, Paloma Iradier tied her career-high with 10 points and Lewis poured in 10 points, three rebounds and two steals.

Walker also added five boards and two assists as six different Retrievers recorded an assist. UMBC had 13 assists on 23 made baskets.

Maryama Turkstra made her first career start and tallied a career-best three blocks in the effort, and Iradier also helped on on defense, adding a pair of blocks.

Scouting Lafayette:
 

  • The Leopards defeated St. Francis (Pa.) 60-58 in a nail biter inside DeGol Arena Sunday afternoon, earning its third straight victory.
  • Junior guard Halee Smith was the leading scorer for Lafayette with a season-high 15 points.
  • On the final possession of the game, Lafayette defended an inbound play with 16 seconds left. The Leopards' zone defense came up big, sealing the victory by forcing a Red Flash shot clock violation.
  • Lafayette shot 45.5 percent from downtown and it was 13-of-19 from the foul line compared to St Francis' 5-of-7.
All-time series:
  • UMBC leads the all-time series, 3-2, but Lafayette has won the previous two meetings ('21 & '22)
  • Last season, UMBC suffered a 72-38 defeat at Lafayette on 11/30/22
  • KK White led the way with 11 points and Kiara Bell contributed 10 rebounds.
  • UMBC hit only 17-of-55 shots from the floor (30.9 percent), while Lafayette buried 31-of-60 (51.7 percent).
