After a five year hiatus, the UMBC Women's Basketball team will face in-state rival Maryland Eastern Shore on Sunday at 2 p.m. in Princess Anne.
The two programs met every year from 2008-2018 with the Hawks holding a 6-5 advantage during that stretch, including winning the past three match-ups. UMBC leads the overall series, 9-7, however.
Last time out,
Anna Blount had 15 points and five rebounds, both team-highs, but the UMBC Women's Basketball team dropped an 88-52 decision at Oregon State on Wednesday night.
Riley Donahue had a career-high nine points on three treys, while
Jordon Lewis returned from injury to pick up 10 points and four rebounds.
The Retrievers used a 15-1 run to take a 17-12 lead with just under 35 seconds to go in the opening stanza, but the Beavers would hit a late three to cut the UMBC advantage to 17-15 after one quarter. OSU would then score the first 17 points of the second quarter and never look back.
The UMBC bench outscored the hosts by a 28-22 margin, and the Retrievers sank 11-14 free throw attempts, compared to Oregon State's 10-13.
Carmen Yánez and
Trinity Palacio each had three assists for the visitors.
Scouting the Hawks:
- Last time out, Eastern Shore (2-3) and Towson were unable to finish the game due to condensation on the floor of the TU Arena.
- The teams played the first two quarters of the game in a relatively low-scoring, defensive battle. Both teams tallied just seven made baskets with Towson shooting 25.9% (7-27) and the Hawks making 24.1% if their shots (7-29).
- While shooters struggled to find rhythm, the UMES bench was a key factor in the Hawks taking a 21-19 lead before play was suspended as Ariana Seawell recorded five points and six rebounds while Jala Bannerman scored four points.
All-Time Series:
- As mentioned above, this will be the 17th all-time meeting between the two programs
- Tyler Moore hit five three pointers, including an overtime-forcing one with less than 10 seconds remaining in the second half, but visiting Maryland Eastern Shore pulled away late in overtime for a 73-67 on 12/31/18.
- UMBC was paced offensively by 17 points from Te'yjah Oliver and 16 points and eight rebounds from Janee'a Summers, who fouled out with 1:16 left in the fourth.
