BALTIMORE -- The UMBC Women's Basketball team looks to get back in the win column when it hosts Loyola (Md.) on Wednesday night in a game broadcast on MASN2.
UMBC (1-2) cut a late 10-point deficit to two, but couldn't equalize and fell, 57-51 to visiting Colgate on Saturday afternoon at The Peake. Anna Blount had nine points, seven rebounds, two steals and an assist in the effort. Blount averaged 17 points, 8.7 rebounds and nearly two steals per game over the first three contests.Â
Carmen Yánez has played the best basketball of her career in the early season, as she is averaging 10 points, 6.7 rebounds and nearly four steals per game, while playing a team-high 123:55.Â
Scouting Loyola:
- Lex Therien drove the right side of the lane and converted a right-handed layup with 1:56 left in regulation gave Loyola University Maryland (1-1) the lead, and her putback with six seconds left secured a 77-73 victory for the Greyhounds over Binghamton University in Reitz Arena.
- Therien drew contact on the first basket and made an ensuing free throw to flip a one-point deficit to a 75-73 advantage for the Greyhounds.
- Therien finished with 22 points and a game-high 11 rebounds for her second double-double of the season. Ratigan added a career-best 17 points, making 5 of 7 from behind the arc.
- Laura Salmerón had nine points, and Meliah Van-Otoo scored eight to go with a game-high four assists.
Loyola leads the all-time series, 26-16, and has won three straight.
Keelah Dixon scored a team-best 21 points, while Ashia McCalla added 13 points, five rebounds and three steals, but the UMBC Women's Basketball team fell to host Loyola, 61-47, at Reitz Arena last year. Dixon's 21 points were tied for her most in a UMBC uniform, as she shot 7-of-11 from the field, including 3-of-3 from three. Kiara Bell also had a solid game for the Retrievers, finishing with nine points, seven rebounds and a pair of blocks.
