Women's Basketball Heads to Binghamton for Wednesday Night Showdown

The UMBC Women's Basketball team (9-11, 6-3 AE) looks to get back to it's winning ways when it travels to New York to face Binghamton on Wednesday night. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. on ESPN+.

Last Time Out:
  • Ashia McCalla (Greenbelt, Md.) scored in double-figures for the fourth straight game, and sixth time in seven overall, but visiting Vermont used a big first quarter to get past UMBC, 64-51, on Saturday at The Peake.
  • McCalla finished with a team-best 16 points, while Laycee Drake (Hancock, N.Y.) added 13, and Nia Staples (Cincinnati, Oh.) came off the bench to score 11. Kiara Bell (Santa Rosa, Calif.) pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds for her third straight double-digit rebound performance.
  • UMBC actually outscored Vermont (15-6, 7-2 AE) 43-42 over the final three quarters, but the Catamounts 22-8 edge in the first was too much for the Retrievers to overcome.
Scouting Binghamton:
  • Senior guard Denai Bowman and redshirt freshman guard Ella Wanzer each scored a game-high 18 points, powering Binghamton (11-11, 4-5 AE) to a 62-51 win over Bryant (7-15, 1-8 AE) in an America East women's basketball game on Saturday afternoon at Chace Athletic Center.
  • Bowman, who shot 8-for-14 from the field, also finished with five rebounds, six assists a block and four steals. In the process, she raised her career scoring total to 1,100 points and moves into 14th place all time in Binghamton program history. Against the Bulldogs, Bowman surpassed Laura Sario (1,088 points from 2004-08) and Alyssa James (1,097 points from 2015-18).
  • Wanzer, meanwhile, was 6-for-12 from the field and 6-for-10 from three-point range. The six field goals tied her career high, which she set against Fairfield back on Dec. 2.
  • Bryant came into the game averaging a conference-best 65.9 points per game. The Bearcats, however, held the Bulldogs to just 30.4 percent shooting for the game (17-of-56) and 19 points during the entire second half.
All-Time Series:
  • Binghamton leads the all-time series, 28-14, but UMBC won the last matchup, 73-69, at The Peake on 12/29/22
  • UMBC graduate student guard Keelah Dixon led four Retrievers in double figures with 19 points, as the Retrievers won their America East opener for the first time since the 2015-16 season.
  • Playing her 100th collegiate game, Dixon hit 7-of-10 shots from the floor and all three shots from behind the arc.
  • Classmates KK White and Scoop Smith added 16 and 11 points respectively and both contributed a team-best seven rebounds. Graduate student forward Kiara Bell, also playing in her 100th game, added 10 points.
  • Sophomore guard Laycee Drake stuffed the stat sheet with six points, a career high seven assists, five rebounds and four steals.
