Men's Hoops Set to Complete Road Trip at America East Leader Vermont on Saturday Afternoon

LAST TIME OUT: UMBC DROPS HEARTBREAKER AT NJIT

- UMBC senior forward Yaw Obeng-Mensah scored a game-high 19 points but the Retrievers dropped a heartbreaker against the NJIT Highlanders, falling 69-65 at the NJIT Wellness and Events Center on Wednesday evening.
 - After trailing 38-26 at the half, UMBC (14-8, 4-3 America East) outscored the hosts by a 14-1 margin and led 40-39 with 16:40 left in the contest. The game went back-and-forth, and the Retrievers had an opportunity to go ahead in the closing seconds but could not do so.
 - NJIT (6-14, 3-4 AE) guard Mekhi Gray (18 points) scored on a driving layup with 3.7 seconds left to break a 65-65 deadlock and the hosts held on for the victory.
 - Mensah converted 9-of-14 field goal attempts and scored 15 of his 19 points in the second half. Graduate student forward Jarvis Doles added nine points and a career-high nine rebounds while also coming up with a season-high three rejections.
 
Game Notes
- UMBC shot 44.4 percent overall (28-for-63) and were 5-of-21 (23.8 percent) from behind the arc.
- NJIT hit 27-of-60 (45 percent) and went 9-of-19 (47.4 percent) from distance.
- UMBC held a 46-30 advantage in points inside the paint.
- The Highlanders held a 42-33 advantage on the boards.
- The Retrievers went just 4-for-12 from the free throw line while the hosts were 6-for-8.
- Graduate student guard Craig Beaudion II recorded two steals and surpassed 100 for his career. He also set a new career-high with seven rebounds.
- Boonyasith splashed his 150th career trey.
- UMBC entered the game 9-0 when holding their opponent under 70 points.
 
ABOUT VERMONT
- The defending champion Catamounts (11-10, 5-2 AE) are the hottest team in the AE, having won three straight. Vermont now has sole possession of first place in the AE.
- Dylan Penn leads the team in scoring at 11.7 ppg. while Aaron Deloney is 20th (11.4 ppg.).
- Robin Duncan is sixth in the league in rebounding at 6.9 per game.
- Duncan also leads the league with a 2.8 assists/turnover ratio.
 
SERIES HISTORY
- Vermont leads 40-9 and have won six of the last seven meetings, including a 74-61 triumph in Baltimore on 1/1/23.
- UMBC's last win was a 66-55 decision in Baltimore during the 2020-21 season.

- UMBC went 3-0 against their Baltimore foes this season, defeating Coppin State, Morgan State and Loyola.
 
BOMBS AWAY
The Retrievers swished 17 triples for the 5th time in program history at UNCG (11/22/22).  UMBC attempted 37 treys, just six shy of their all-time single-game mark.
The squad then broke the record with 21 bombs in their blowout victory over Coppin State. The Retrievers attempted 40 shots from distance in the contest.
The 21 3s are tied for the 5th most in the country this season.
UMBC ranks 33rd in the country with 8.8 3's made per game and 40th in attempts per game at 25.3.
 
TAKING CARE OF THE BALL
- UMBC ranks 11th in the country with a 1.54 assists/turnover ratio
- The Dawgs are 8th in the country in fewest turnovers per game (10.0).
- UMBC committed a season-low 5 miscues at Bryant.
Starting point guard Craig Beaudion II is 27th in the country in assists/turnover ratio and is 2nd in the AE (2.70). He's also 8th in the AE in steals per game (1.3).
- The Retrievers are 10-5 win they win the turnover battle.
 
BENCH MOB
UMBC's bench ranks 23rd in the country with 27.9 ppg.
Matteo Picarelli leads the charge at 10.6 ppg.
 
THAT 70'S SHOW
The Retrievers scored 70 or more points in 10 straight before the 64-point output at Maryland. It was the first time they had hit the mark 10 straight times since the 2000-01 season. They are 13-3 when they score 70+ this season. The Retrievers are 60th in the country in scoring offense at 77.2 ppg.
