Women's Basketball Returns Home to Host NJIT

The UMBC Women's Basketball team (8-10, 5-2 AE) returns home to host NJIT (9-10, 4-3 AE) in a critical America East contest. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m., and fans can tune in on ESPN+.

Last Time Out:
  •  Ashia McCalla (Grrenbelt, Md.) scored a game-high 18 points prior to fouling out late in the 2nd half and KK White (Indianapolis, Ind.) added 11 points as the UMBC Women's Basketball team came away with a wild, 62-57, overtime victory at New Hampshire on Saturday afternoon.
  • The 5-2 start in America East play is the best start for UMBC since 2011-12
  •  Kiara Bell (Santa Rosa, Calif.) finished with nine points and a game-best 10 rebounds
  • Laycee Drake (Hancock, N.Y.) added four points, six rebounds, four assists, a steal and a block
  • UMBC's lead was 49-39 until UNH hit its first three-pointer of the game to cut the lead to 49-42 with 2:26 left.
  • The Wildcats would then hit another three to make it 49-45 with just 56 seconds left, but Laycee Drake (Hancock, N.Y.) hit a pair of free throws with 34 seconds left to make it 51-45.
  • UNH then hit another three, stole the inbounds pass and drained to free throws to cut UMBC lead to 51-50 with 25 seconds left
  • Keelah Dixon (Boston, Mass) split a pair of free throws with 19 seconds left to make it 52-50, McCalla fouled out on a three-point shot attempt and UNH would hit all three free throws to take a 53-52 lead, its first lead since 2-0, with 11 seconds left
  • Scoop Smith (Pemberton Township, N.J.) got fouled with two seconds left and split the free throws to tie the game and send it to overtime
  • KK White gave the Retrievers the lead right away in overtime when the opening tip went right to her and she raced for an uncontested layup.
  • After the Wildcats tied it up, Bell and Drake each hit a shot to make it a 59-55 game with 1:40 left
  • Once again, UNH would answer with a layup, but Bell would ger her own offensive rebound, get fouled and split the free throws with 50 seconds left to push the lead to 60-57
Scouting NJIT:
  • Visiting Vermont scored 41 first half points and cruised to a 65-32 road victory Saturday night inside NJIT's Wellness and Events Center.
  • For NJIT, Maria Fux and Alejandra Zuniga each posted seven points followed by Kenna Squier's six points and game-best eight rebounds.
  • A few days earlier, five Highlanders scored in double-figures paced by Zuniga's game-tying 19 points as NJIT rallied back down by as many as 18 in a come-from-behind overtime win over visiting Bryant, 71-67, in a Wednesday America East Conference matinee inside NJIT's Wellness and Events Center on Education Day.
  • The overtime win was the second of the season (71-65 OT win vs. CCSU) for NJIT 

Series History:
  • NJIT leads the all-time series, 2-1, and has won the last two contests
  • Last season was the fi rst time the teams met as Amrica East rivals, and NJIT took the only matchup, 72-58 at The Peake.
  • Last year, UMBC returned to the court for the first time in 25 days and gave a scrappy effort before falling, 72-58, to first-place NJIT.
  • Graduate student forward Janee'a Summers (Bound Brook, N.J.) led all scorers with 21 points and added nine rebounds.
  • Summers became the 14th Retriever to surpass the 1,100-point mark with 1,103.
