Women's Basketball Welcomes UMass Lowell to The Peake for Annual Midday Madness Game

The UMBC Women's Basketball team looks to get back to its winning ways when it hosts UMass Lowell on Wednesday morning in the annual Midday Madness game. Special tip-off time is 11 a.m. and fans can catch all the action on ESPN+.

Last Time Out:
  • Host Maine (8-8, 4-0 AE) used a massive second half to pull away from the visiting UMBC (6-10, 3-2 AE), 71-54, on Saturday afternoon. 
  • Keelah Dixon (Boston, Mass.) finished with a team-high 17 points on four three-pointers, while Kiara Bell (Santa Rosa, Calif.) added 10 points.
  • Ashia McCalla (Greenbelt, Md.), KK White (Indianapolis, In.) and Scoop Smith (Pemberton Township, N.J.) each added seven points in the defeat.
  • The teams got off to a back-and-forth start, with several lead changes, but Maine eventually pulled ahead 18-13 with a minute left
  • Paloma Iradier (Santander, Spain) hit a layup and Dixon followed with a late three to tie the game at 18 after the first quarter
  • UMBC shot 8-13 from the field in the first quarter, with White and Dixon each tallying five points.
  • The teams again continued to trade the lead in the second, UMBC took a brief 29-26 lead after McCalla scored three-straight points, but the Black Bears ended the half on a 9-3 run to take a 35-32 lead into the break
  • McCalla lead UMBC with seven first half points
  • Maine could not miss to start the second half, jumping out to a 48-40 lead midway through the quarter
  • The lead continued to grow as the hosts shot 9-15 from the floor while holding the Retrievers to 3-13 shooting en route to a 54-42 lead heading into the final ten minutes.
  • The Black Bears continued to pull away in the fourth, despite Dixon draining a trio of threes, outscoring UMBC 17-12 in the frame and 36-22 overall in the second half
Scouting UMass Lowell:
  • The UMass Lowell women's basketball team (1-14, 0-5 AE) fell to the Binghamton Bearcats (10-8, 3-2 AE) in an action-packed conference matchup on Saturday afternoon.
  • Senior Jaliena Sanchez (Springfield, Mass.) scored a career-high 24 points to lead all scorers and added four assists and one steal.
  • Sophomore Ivory Finley (Minneapolis, Minn.) added 13 points and three assists while fellow sophomore Amaya Dowdy (Woonsocket, R.I.) scored 10 points and had a team-high nine rebounds.
  • Sophomore Tasha Lima (Roslindale, Mass.) scored her first collegiate points, totaling four on the afternoon and added in two steals.
All-Time Series
  • UMass Lowell leads the all-time series, 10-8, and has won three-straight
  • Last season, the two teams played a pair of tight contests, with UML taking a 76-72 decision in Massachusetts and then rallying for a 70-68 win at The Peake on 2/12
  • In the second meeting, Graduate Student Janee'a Summers (Bound Brook, N.J.) scored a career-high tying 25 points for the second time in three games, but a late 18-2 run helped visiting UMass Lowell to a 70-68 victory.
  • UMBC shot a 2021-22 NCAA single-game best 10-of-12 from three (83.3%), with Danae Marquez (Fresno, Calif.) going 4-for-4 from deep.
  • Onome-Juliet Esadah (Warri, Delta State, Nigeria) had 12 points and 12 rebounds off the bench for the Retrievers, while Jatarrikah Settle (Frederick, Md.) finished with 10 points
