Women's Basketball Returns to Action at Maine on Saturday

Fresh off a scheduled bye week, the UMBC Women's Basketball team returns to action with a Saturday matinee at Maine. Tip-off from The Pit at Memorial Gymnasium is scheduled for 1 p.m. on ESPN3.

Last Time Out:
  • Graduate senior forward Kiara Bell scored 18 points and grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds to help lead the UMBC women's basketball team to a 69-60 victory over the Bryant Bulldogs, in an America East Conference contest at the Chesapeake Employers Insurance Arena last Saturday afternoon. 
  • UMBC (6-9, 3-1 AE) also received double-figures in scoring from graduate student guard Ashia McCalla (16 points, 5 rebounds) and graduate student guard Keelah Dixon (10 points).
  • UMBC shot 51 percent (25-of-49) and held Bryant to a 37.9 percent clip.
  • Bell (7-of-11 fga) paced the team with five assists (tied career-high) and also had a career-best five steals. It was her second double-double of the season.
  • McCalla's 16 points (5-for-7 fga) were a season-high.
  • UMBC is off to their best conference start since the 2011-12 season when they opened up with a 4-1 record.
Scouting Maine:
  • For the second consecutive game, Adrianna Smith bested 30 points as the sophomore forward finished with a career-high 34 points to lead Maine past the New Jersey Institute of Technology, 69-63, on Saturday afternoon.
  • Smith, who finished 14-of-22 from the floor, added 10 rebounds and four assists for her eighth double-double of the season and fourth in as many games. Her 34 points were the most since Blanca Millan also tallied 34 in an outing against Northeastern in December of 2020.
  • Sera Hodgson hit a pair of triples and finished 4-of-4 from the floor for 12 points while Anne Simon added eight points, four rebounds, and a pair of assists. 
  • Maine, which held a decisive 32-21 advantage on the boards, forced 17 NJIT turnovers, 14 of which coming in the first half. The Black Bears turned in their best shooting effort of the season after going 27-of-49 from the floor for a season-high 55.1 percent mark.
  • Smith was named America East Player of the Week after she averaged 32.0 points, 10.0 rebounds, 4.5 assists with two double-doubles while shooting 64.1 percent from the floor in a 2-0 week for the Black Bears.
All-Time Series:
  • Maine leads the all-time series, 24-13, and has won three-straight and 15 of the last 17 meetings.
  • Last season, the two teams met on back-to-back days in Maine, with the Black Bears completing the rare weekend sweep with a 71-47 win on 2/27/22
  • UMBC led 11-7 after the first quarter, but Maine outscored the Retrievers, 23-9, in the second quarter
  • Graduate student Onome-Juliet Esadah (Delta State, Nigeria) led the visitors with 14 points and 9 rebounds. Esadah hit all six attempts from the field and both free throw attempts. Junior Keelah Dixon (Boston, Mass.) added 13 points.
  • The Retrievers outscored Maine in the paint, 34-28.
