Baseball Hosts Georgetown and Maryland Eastern Shore in Mid-Week Contests

Wednesday's game against the Hawks has been moved to a 3:00 p.m. start

The UMBC baseball team (13-17, 5-7 America East) plays a pair of mid-week games against non-conference foes this week. The Retrievers take on Georgetown on Tuesday (6:00 p.m.) and Maryland Eastern Shore on Wednesday.

Please note, Wednesday's game time versus Eastern Shore has been altered to 3:00 p.m.

A Glance at the Retrievers
  • UMBC baseball rallied from a 6-2 deficit, scoring seven unanswered runs to knock off UMass Lowell, 9-6, in ten innings at LaLacheur Park on Sunday. UMBC's comeback salvaged a tough weekend, as the Retrievers dropped two one-run affairs to UML on Friday and Saturday.

  • Freshman outfielder Jayden Shertel collected a season high four hits and scored three runs, while graduate student second baseman Myles Nicholson went 3-for-5 with three runs driven in and two scored in the victory. UMBC senior reliever Shane Gorman retired all nine River Hawks he faced in the eighth, ninth and tenth innings to earn the victory.

  • Nicholson is 14th in the nation in batting average with a .419 mark. He has scored 52 runs, which is tied for the 13th-best figure nationally.

  • Shertel raised his average to .395, while catcher Tony Krueger collected 4 hits in 10 AB's in the series and moved his batting mark to .342.

A Look At The Hoyas and the All-Time Series

  • Georgetown (19-13) comes to Baltimore on Tuesday after dropping all three games of a weekend series to Big East opponent Creighton. The Hoyas were outscored 44-8 in the three game series.
  • The Hoyas are a completely different side when they play at home vs on the road. At home they have posted a 12-2 record while have only managed six wins in sixteen games on the road.
  • Georgetown is led by sophomore 1B/OF Jake Hyde. Hyde leads the Hoyas in batting average (.371), runs scored (38), hits (49), doubles (11), homeruns (13), and RBIs (36).
  • Tuesday's meeting will be the second of the year between the two sides with host Georgetown taking the first, 9-7, on March 7.
  • UMBC leads the overall series through 57 games with a 34-23 record dating back to the first meeting in 1979. Georgetown owns a five-game win streak over the Retrievers, winning three at home and two at UMBC.

A Look At The Hawks and the All-Time Series

  • Maryland Eastern Shore (9-22, 8-8 MEAC) had a very rough start to their season. The Hawks lost their first nine games of the season before securing their first win at Radford.
  • Eastern Shore enters this game splitting a four-game series with their conference opponent Delaware State.
  • Brantley Cutler leads the Hawks with a .330 batting mark, including a team-best 10 doubles. Ryan Howe is at .327 with 3 home runs and 22 RBI's.
  • UMBC has never lost to Eastern Shore, winning all 14 meetings between the two sides.
  • Wednesday will be the first meeting between the two since April 2019.

UMBC faces NJIT in an America East Conference series this weekend. The games will be played at Kean College in Union, N.J.
