Women's Basketball Closes Non-Conference Play at Hartford on Thursday Afternoon

The UMBC Women's Basketball team closes out the non-conference portion of the schedule on Thursday when it travels north to face former America East foe Hartford at 2 p.m.

Last Time Out:
  • American's Emily Johns hit a 3-pointer with 8.1 seconds remaining to give the visiting Eagles a 70-68 victory over UMBC in a topsy-turvy non-conference contest at "The Peake."
  • After advancing the ball to the front court via a time out, UMBC tried to lob the ball into KK White cutting to the basket, but she was surrounded and whistled for traveling with 3.7 seconds left.
  • UMBC graduate student guard Nia Staples produced a brilliant game, scoring a career high 24 points in defeat.
  • The game ended with two major scoring runs. Trailing 61-57, Staples hit three treys in 54 seconds and Kiara Bell added a bucket as part of an 11-0 surge which gave the hosts a 68-61 lead at the 2:38 mark. But American finished the game on a 9-0 run.
  • Bell (18 points) and Ashia McCalla (9 points) fouled out during American's final surge.
Scouting Hartford
  • Sophomore Nayeli Dowding scored in double figures for the second game in a row, while junior Kymilondra Nance scored a career-high eight points as the Hartford women's basketball team fell 70-34 at Binghamton on Tuesday.
  • Hartford is competing as an independent in its final year at the Division I level, as they will be moving to Division III next season
  • The Hawks enter the game at 0-13 and have the lowest scoring offense in the country at 40.9 points per game.
  • Dowding leads the team with 7.9 points per game, while Elena Houghton is grabbing a team-best 5.4 rebounds per game

All-Time Series
  • Hartford leads the all-time series 30-11, and won the last meeting
  • UMBC had a three-game win streak in the series until the Hawks won in Baltimore last season.
  • Last year, UMBC cut a 20-point third quarter deficit to one point late in the final minute of play, but fell, 74-71, to visiting Hartford at The Peake
The Retrievers are now off for a week before opening America East play on 12/29 when they host Binghamton at p.m. at The Peake
