Men's Basketball Visits Lehigh On Saturday Afternoon

LAST TIME OUT | A RECORD-SETTING NIGHT

The Retrievers set a school and America East record by netting 21 treys in a 109-82 rout of Coppin State at the Chesapeake Arena on Wednesday. The 109 points scored is tied for the sixth most scored in the 55-year history of Retriever basketball. The 21 triples are tied for the second most in the country thus far this season.
 
The Retrievers  (4-4) buried 15 treys (of 28) in the first twenty minutes and outscored the Eagles, 65-36. The 65 points in a half is the third most scored in program history.
 
Senior guard Jacob Boonyasith scored a career high 24 points, hitting his first five treys of the game. He also added a career high eight assists. Graduate student guard Colton Lawrence topped his UMBC high by one, totaling 22 points on 8-of-11 shooting. Boonyasith led eight Retrievers who knocked down treys with five, followed by four each by Lawrence and Craig Beaudion II. Beaudion hit all four of his shots from behind the arc and scored a season high 14 points.
 
DOG BYTES
Prior to scoring just three points versus Coppin State, junior Matteo Picarelli averaged 19.0 ppg. over a four-game span, all off the bench. He hit five treys in four straight games and went 20-36 (56 percent) from behind the arc during the stretch. Picarelli became the first Retriever to hit (5) treys in four straight contests…Colton Lawrence  needs just 11 points for 1,000 in his career. He's scored in double-figures in all eight contests this season…Graduate student Jarvis Doles is averaging 11.5 points and 6.3 rebounds over his last five contests and earned his first start of the season at Georgetown…He is also 5th in the country in free throw percentage (95.2 percent)…Boonyasith is 23rd in the country and leads the conference with a 3.71 assists/turnover ratio. UMBC ranks 15th in the country in fewest turnovers per game (9.9) and are 21st in free throw percentage (77.4 percent)
 
ABOUT THE OPPONENT
Lehigh dropped their season-opener at Virginia Tech but then won four straight contests (Misericordia, Marist, St. Francis (PA) and Monmouth. The Mountain Hawks, however, fell to UMES on Wednesday. Evan Taylor, (13.3  Keith Higgins Jr. (12.4) and Tyler Whitney-Sidney  (11.7) are all averaging double-figures. Taylor also leads the squad with 5.4 rpg. The Mountain Hawks average 72.4 ppg. and are allowing 70.9 ppg.
 
SERIES HISTORY         
The Retrievers are 2-3 all-time vs. the Mountain Hawks. Lehigh has won three straight. In their last meeting in 2014-2015, the Mountain Hawks edged UMBC by a score of 58-55 at the RAC.
 
PICARELLI COMING INTO HIS OWN   
Junior guard Matteo Picarelli has been the biggest surprise for the Retrievers through the first eight contests and is the second-leading scorer on the squad at 13.0 ppg.  The Milan, Italy native went for 19 points in the victory against Lafayette and followed that up with a new career-high 21 points in the triumph over Central Connecticut State.  Picarelli is averaging 23.4  minutes per game this season after playing just 8.6 mpg. in 21-22.  He's already surpassed last season's scoring total of 63 points.  Picarelli is shooting 50 percent from 3-point range (26-of-52) this season and is 32-for-60 (.533) overall.  He ranks 20th in the NCAA in 3-pt percentage and is 28th with 3.25 per game.
 
BOMBS AWAY
The Retrievers swished 17 triples for the 5th time in program history at UNCG (11/22/22). The squad then broke the school and America East Conference record with 21 bombs in their blowout victory over Coppin State. The Dawgs attempted a school record 44 treys in the contest. UMBC is 6th in the country with 11.5 made 3's per game and rank 4th in attempts (30.1 pg.).
