Men's Hoops Look to Make It Six Straight As Retrievers Host William & Mary Sunday Afternoon

LAST TIME OUT - DAWGS MAKE IT FIVE STRAIGHT

The visiting UMBC men's basketball team won their fifth straight contest as they defeated the Loyola (Md.) Greyhounds, 72-69, on Tuesday evening at Reitz Arena. UMBC (8-4) freshman Dion Brown was sensational in just his second career game as the guard produced a game-high 21 points on 9-of-12 shooting in 19 minutes off the bench. Graduate student Jarvis Doles added 12 points and senior Jacob Boonyasith was also in double-figures with 11 points. Senior forward Yaw Obeng-Mensah just missed a double-double with nine points along with a game-high 11 rebounds. The game featured nine lead changes and UMBC trailed by as many as seven points on two different occasions in the opening half. UMBC snapped a nine-game losing skid to Loyola (Md) and their last victory against the Greyhounds came during the 2004-05 campaign.
 
Game Notes
- Brown's 21 points were the most by a UMBC freshman since Joe Sherburne produced 25 at Duquesne on 12/8/15.
 - Boonyasith scored his 700th career point with a bucket in the opening half.
- Starting point guard Craig Beaudion II and key reserve forward Tra'Von Fagan did not dress.
- Docks made his first career start at the point and scored six points while dishing a career-best five assists for the second time.
- UMBC's bench outscored Loyola's by a 29-16 margin.
- The Retrievers are 6-0 when they hold their opponent under 70 points.
- UMBC went 3-0 against their Baltimore foes defeating Coppin State, Morgan State and Loyola.
 
ABOUT WILLIAM & MARY
The Tribe have lost four of their last five contests, including a 67-53 setback in their last game versus Norfolk State. Guard Anders Nelson leads the team in scoring at 10.9 ppg. and is also distributing a team-best 5.3 assists per game. Noah Collier has corralled a team-high 7.6 rebounds per game. Gabe Dorsey has connected on 32-of-72 attempts from long-distance for a .444 clip.
 
SERIES HISTORY
UMBC and William & Mary have only met twice. The Retrievers defeated the Tribe in Baltimore, 64-60, during the 2005-06 campaign. William and Mary won the following year by as score of 70-58 in Williamsburg, Virginia.

THAT 70'S SHOW
UMBC has produced at least 70 points in nine consecutive contests. It's the first time the Retrievers have done that since 11/12/17 to 12/6/17. UMBC accomplished the feat in 10 straight from 12/27/2000 to 1/3/2001 as a member of the Northeast Conference.

BOMBS AWAY
The Retrievers swished 17 triples for the 5th time in program history at UNCG (11/22/22).  UMBC attempted 37 treys, just six shy of their all-time single-game mark. The squad then broke the record with 21 bombs in their blowout victory over Coppin State. The Retrievers attempted 40 shots from distance in the contest. UMBC ranks 12th in the country with 10.5 3's made per game.  The Retrievers are 20th in attempts per game at 27.6
 
TAKING CARE OF THE BALL
UMBC ranks 38th in the country with a 1.39 assists/turnover ratio. Starting point guard Craig Beaudion II is 44th in the country in the category (2.75). He's also tied for 5th in the AE in steals per game (1.45). UMBC is 5-2 win they win the turnover battle.
 
AMERICA EAST LEADERS
UMBC leads the conference in free throw percentage (.759), 3-pt field goals per game (10.5) and assists/turnover ratio (1.39).

BOONYASITH NAMED AE POW
UMBC senior wing Jacob Jacob Boonyasith was named the America East Men's Basketball Player of the Week on December 5th. Boonyasith garnered his first America East honor after averaging 20.5 points in a pair of non-conference victories against Coppin State and Lehigh. Boonyasith shot 54 percent overall and was even better from behind the arc as he drilled 9-of-13 attempts (69 percent). In addition, he averaged 4.5 assists and 4.0 rebounds. Boonyasith scored a career-high 24 points and added a career-best eight assists in the 109-82 victory at "The Peake" last Wednesday. He made his first five treys and scored the final 10 points during a key 13-1 run that extended a modest first-half lead. He followed that up with a team-high 17 points and four rebounds in the 88-62 win against Lehigh on Saturday. Boonyasith scored 12 points in the opening half as the Retrievers led 48-21 at the break. Boonyasith has made 25-of-44 field goals (.568) over his last five contests and is 13-for-22 (.590) from long-distance.
 
PICARELLI COMING INTO HIS OWN   
Junior guard Matteo Picarelli has been one of the biggest surprises for the Retrievers through the first 12 contests as he's been one of the leading scorers on the squad at 10.5 ppg. The Milan, Italy native went for 19 points in the victory against Lafayette and followed that up with a new career-high 21 points in the triumph over Central Connecticut State.  Picarelli is averaging 23.6 minutes per game this season after playing just 8.6 mpg. in 21-22.  He's already surpassed last season's scoring total of 63 points.  His 3.0 3's per game leads the AE (35th in NCAA) and he's also first in accuracy (.432) and is tied for 10th in the country.
