McCalla's Late Basket Gives Women's Basketball Opening Night Victory

Retrievers score 27 in fourth quarter to triumph, 79-77

Box Score BALTIMORE – UMBC graduate student guard Ashia McCalla hit a short jumper with nine seconds left to give the Retrievers a hard-fought 79-77 victory over Gettysburg before a boisterous crowd in the opener at Chesapeake Arena.

The visiting Bullets committed a turnover on the ensuing possession and the Retrievers ran out the clock to claim the win.

Four Retrievers finished in double figures, led by graduate student forward Kiara Bell, who scored 18 points and added eight rebounds. Grad student guard KK White added 16 points, while Scoop Smith and McCalla tallied 12 apiece. Smith added nine rebounds.

UMBC scored 27 fourth quarter points, hitting 11-of 20 shots from the floor and 4-of-5 from the free throw line.  

HOW IT HAPPENED – FIRST QUARTER
  • UMBC dominated the boards early, snaring 10 of the game's first 12 rebounds and surging out to an 18-10 lead at the 4:27 mark.
  • But Gettysburg knocked down 4-of-6 shots from behind the arc in the first 10 minutes and cut the deficit to 26-24 after 10 minutes.
HIH – SECOND QUARTER
  • Gettysburg took their first lead at 33-32 on an uncontested layup at the 4:21 mark.
  • Smith hit an and-one to give the Retrievers a 35-33 lead with 2:51 to play, but the Bullets' AB Holsinger knocked down two treys to give the visitors a 39-35 halftime lead.
FIRST HALF STATS
  • Gettysburg knocked down 6-of-11 treys in the first half, while UMBC missed all four attempts.
  • KK White led UMBC with 10 points, hitting 5-of-8 shots from the floor.
HIH – THIRD QUARTER
  • Smith scored five early points and the game stayed tight in the early stages of the period. Gettysburg lead, 48-46, at the 4:30 mark.
  • Keelah Dixon came off the bench to score six third quarter points.
  • UMBC knotted the score at 48 and 50, but trailed, 55-52 after 30 minutes.
HIH – FOURTH QUARTER
  • Gettysburg extended their lead to a game-high points at 60-54 in the first two minutes of the period.
  • But the Retrievers outscored the Bullets, 16-2, and took a game-high 70-62 lead on a White jumper with 3:58 remaining.
  • The Bullets would not relent, scoring the next seven points to slice the deficit to 70-69.
  • UMBC's Nia Staples hit the Retrievers' first trey of the night to put the hosts up, 77-72, with 1:29 remaining, but Gettysburg matched that trey and hit a jumper in the paint with 26 seconds remaining, setting up McCalla's game-winning sequence.
FINAL STATS
  • Gettysburg hit 10-of-20 from long range; 70 of UMBC's 79 points came from field goals.
  • White converted 8-of-12 shots from the field.
