Box Score BALTIMORE – UMBC graduate student guard
Craig Beaudion II's driving layup with 1.8 seconds remaining gave the Retrievers a hard-earned 78-76 victory over Central Connecticut State.
Retriever junior guard
Matteo Picarelli tied the game twice in the final 2:04 of the game. He knocked down three free throws at that mark of the game and then buried his fifth trey of the game with 31 seconds remaining to knot the score at 76-all.
Central missed a quick trey from the right corner on the ensuing possession and the Retrievers were awarded the rebound. Beaudoin II got the ball on the right wing 30 feet from the basket, got a half-step on his bigger defender and converted the driving layup.
The Blue Devils' long heave before the buzzer fell well short of the mark.
Picarelli, who had just set his career high with 19 points in Friday's 71-63 win over Lafayette, re-set it with 21 points on 5-of-8 shooting from 3-point range.
He led four Retrievers in double figures.
Colton Lawrence scored 15 points and
Jacob Boonyasith and
Jarvis Doles added 13 apiece.
Reserve guard Davonte Sweatman led Central Connecticut with 17 points.
There were nine lead changes in the first half and the Blue Devils emerged with a 35-34 lead at the break.
A Sweatman trey with 10:09 to play in the second half gave the visitors a 60-52 advantage. Picarelli capped a 9-2 response with a trey, but the Blue Devils continued to knock down shots and rebuilt the margin to 67-61 with 6:01 remaining.
UMBC (3-2) matched their season high with 11 treys, hitting 47.8 percent (11-of-23) from long range. The Retrievers were also proficient from the floor (49.1 percent) and free throw line (15-of-18) and only committed four second half turnovers.
The Blue Devils converted 12-of-25 shots from behind the arc in the contest.
The win snapped a five-game losing streak to the Blue Devils.
