Game One:
NJIT got the scoring started early in the first inning with three runs to take an early 3-0 lead. That lead would extend to 4-0 before the Retrievers got on the board. Matt Clarke (Wilkes Barre, Pa.) kept his strong weekend going with an RBI single that scored Michael Cilio (Chester, N.J.). Luke Trythall (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) followed that up with an RBI single of his own to plate Clarke and cut the deficit in half.
UMBC starter Luke Johnson (Lewes, Del.) would settle in holding the Highlanders off the board through the fifth where the Retrievers tied it 4-4. Joe Novenche (Clifton Park, N.Y.) doubled home Trythall before scoring on a Drew Roberts (Matthews, N.C.) RBI bloop single.
However, the Highlanders would respond the next half inning with three runs to take a 7-4 lead into the seventh. Ian Diaz (Philadelphia, Pa.) cut it to within two after his third home run of the weekend, but NJIT held on for a 7-5 win.
Clarke and Trythall each had two hits with each driving in a run. Eight different Retrievers recorded a hit in game one.
Game Two:
NJIT started out game two the same way as game one putting up four runs in their half of the first. The Highlanders would take a 7-0 lead into the fourth before UMBC found their swing.
Christian Torres (Miami, Fla.) laced a triple to open the inning and was brought home by Cilio who hit a single through the left side. Just two batters later, Nolan Charlton (Atlantic City, N.J.) smashed a two-run home run to cut the deficit to 7-3.
After the Highlanders added three in their half of the fifth, Christian Easley (Collinsville, Va.) smacked a solo home run to make it a 10-4 deficit. NJIT would get that run back with three in the sixth to take a 13-4 lead. After another three runs in the sixth, Joey Goodwin (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) drilled a mammoth two-run home run to left to make it 13-6. However, NJIT would add a run in the ninth to take game two 14-6.
Charlton and Goodwin each drove in two runs as UMBC only mustered six hits.
UMBC will head to Binghamton next Saturday and Sunday, May 8-9 with both days starting at noon.
