Retriever Baseball Returns Home for Weekend Set Against Hartford

BALTIMORE-- UMBC baseball returns to Alumni Field to take on Hartford this weekend. The Retrievers will face their final Division A opponent before opening Division B play next weekend. UMBC comes in at 9-7, 4-7 AE after a series split with UAlbany last weekend.

Scouting the Retrievers:

-The Retrievers return to Baltimore at 9-7, 4-7 AE after a series split against the Great Danes this past weekend. UAlbany picked up wins on Saturday, holding the Retrievers to just one run before UMBC got revenge with a pair of wins on Sunday. 

-Ian Diaz (Philadelphia, Pa.) leads the team at the plate with a .408 batting average having played in all but one game. He is slugging .714 with two doubles, two triples, and three home runs. Christian Torres (Miami, Fla.) has driven in a team-best 14 runs.

-Reid Celata (Virginia Beach, Va.) leads the rotation with a 2.14 ERA in three starts, striking out 11 in 21.0 innings with one complete game. Joe Nestel (Drexel Hill, Pa.) and Luke Johnson (Lewes, Del.) are leading the team with 20 and 17 strikeouts respectively. 

Scouting the Hawks:

-Hartford comes to Baltimore at 6-6, 6-6 AE in the midst of a four-game losing streak after getting swept by Stony Brook last weekend. The Hawks lost a heartbreaker in game four on a squeeze bunt in extra innings. 

-John Thrasher leads the team at the plate with a .395 batting average having started all 12 games. He has 17 hits, five doubles, and eight runs scored. Derek Tenney leads the team with four home runs and 10 RBI.

-Tim Blaisdell leads the rotation with a 2.50 ERA in three starts giving up five earned runs in 18.0 innings of work. Nicholas Dombkowski leads the staff with 25 strikeouts, hurling two complete games in three starts.

All-Time Series:

-The Retrievers and Hawks have met 67 times prior to this weekend with UMBC holding a slim 34-33 lead in the series. The last time the two played was in 2019 where UMBC took two of three in Baltimore in late April. 

-The series has been a battle in recent years with UMBC leading 8-7 since the 2016 season. 

On Deck:

-UMBC will return to the road to take on Stony Brook in the first of two series against the Seawolves next Saturday and Sunday. Both days start at noon on AmericaEast.TV.
