Celebrating the 1986 and 2001 UMBC Championship Baseball Squads

As the 2026 NCAA baseball regionals begin this week, we celebrate the proud legacy of Retriever baseball. This May marks milestone anniversaries of the remarkable 1986 and 2001 Retriever teams, whose achievements continue to inspire.

During its final years in Division II, Retriever baseball delivered a triumphant 1986 season, forty years ago, earning its third and final NCAA regional appearance before making the jump to Division I. That unforgettable 31-6-1 squad participated in the South Atlantic Regional in Columbus, Georgia, challenging powerhouse teams Columbus and Tennessee-Martin. The season sparkled with spectacular performances from UMBC Hall of Famer Jeff Crabill (.480), infielder/first baseman Jack Meyers (.395); shortstop/pitcher Brian Price (52 runs, 18 doubles, 80 strikeouts, 9-3 pitching); infielder C.J. Bokman (.367); and third baseman Doug Ward (10 home runs), all celebrated with All-Penn-Mar Conference and All-South Atlantic Region honors. Ward also earned Academic All-American honorable mention.

Twenty-five years ago, the 2001 squad crowned a historic campaign by thrillingly capturing the university's first-ever Northeast Conference (NEC) Championship. The Retrievers clinched the title against Monmouth in Atlantic City, New Jersey, earning an automatic NCAA Division I Baseball Tournament bid, only the program's second NCAA Division I berth at the time. They battled fiercely in the Wilson, North Carolina Regionals against No.7 ranked East Carolina and Winthrop, finishing an outstanding 31-20-2 overall and dominating the conference with a 17-6 mark. NEC Pitcher of the Year Eric Weltmer (12-1), who broke both UMBC and NEC records for single-season wins, authored a brilliant championship game, scattering six hits and two walks over nine innings, allowing just one unearned run and fanning eight in a masterful, complete-game performance. Weltmer's heroic run (2-0, 2.50 ERA, two complete games) rightfully earned him tournament Most Valuable Player honors. Infielders Chad Gerben (.372, 20 doubles) and Hall of Famer Jared Boyd (.371) were joined by outfielder Greg Deboy (.344), catcher Scott Kosmicky (62 RBI), and Weltmer on the First Team All-Conference squad. Kosmicky also smashed 17 home runs, which is still tied for the single-season high. The pitching staff recorded 22 complete games, a school single-season record.

Both squads were led by legendary former UMBC head coach John Jancuska, who spent 34 seasons leading the UMBC baseball program from 1978 to 2011. The UMBC Hall of Famer amassed a school-record 673 career victories, and he is the longest-tenured and winningest coach in UMBC history. Jancuska guided the team to five NCAA Tournament appearances, split between Division II (1978, 1979, 1986) and Division I (1992, 2001). He was named Coach of the Year in four NCAA Division I conferences: the East Coast Conference (1992), the Big South Conference (1993), the Northeast Conference (2000), and the America East Conference (2008).
