Retriever Baseball Drops Two at UAlbany on Saturday

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Albany, N.Y.-- UMBC baseball dropped 6-0, 5-1 decisions at UAlbany on Saturday afternoon. The Retriever bats were stymied by good pitching, with UMBC collecting just 11 hits across the two games. Joe Novenche (Clifton Park, N.Y.) drove in the only run of the day in game two.

UMBC falls to 7-7, 2-7 AE while the Great Danes improve to 7-10, 5-5 AE on the year.

Game One:

The Retrievers started the game going down in order, and the Great Danes capitalized in their half of the first, getting a solo home run to make it 1-0 early. That lead would increase to a 4-0 lead after the third, and that would be all the Great Danes would need.

UMBC trailed 6-0 into the sixth and had their best chance to score in that inning. The Retrievers would load the bases after an Ian Diaz (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Michael Cilio (Chester, N.J.) back-to-back singles. UMBC would load the bases with Dmitri Floyd (Dover, Del.) getting hit by a pitch, but all three would be stranded on base.

The Retrievers would get a runner on base in the ninth but fell 6-0 in game one. Cilio led the way with two hits as the Retrievers had just five as a team.

Game Two:

The Great Danes started game two the same way as game one with a run in their half of the first inning, this time on an RBI double. UMBC would then give up three runs in the fourth and one in the fifth to trail 5-0.

UMBC did get a run back in the seventh. Luke Johnson (Lewes, Del.) singled with one out before being pinch ran for by Peter Godrick (Millersville, Md./Archbishop Spalding). Ryan Brown (Hagerstown, Md./St. James) would follow up with a single, and both advanced on a passed ball to put two in scoring position. Novenche then hit a sacrifice fly to score Godrick making it 5-1.

UAlbany would hold off the Retrievers in the final two innings to win by that same score. Six different Retrievers recorded a hit in the contest as UMBC left six runners on base.

The two will close the series with a doubleheader tomorrow starting at noon.
