Stony Brook Sweeps UMBC Baseball on Sunday

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Stony Brook, N.Y.-- UMBC led in both contests on Sunday, but could not hold on as the Seawolves completed the series sweep of the Retrievers on Sunday. Christian Torres (Miami, Fla.) drove in five runs in game one to lead the Retrievers.

UMBC falls to 12-12, 7-12 AE while the Seawolves improve to 19-8, 15-1 AE.

Game One:

Stony Brook quickly raced out to a 3-0 lead after the first two innings before the Retriever offense came to life. Christian Maceda (Oradell, N.J.) led off the inning with a single and was followed by an Ethan Wentzlaff (Damascus, Md./Damascus) single and Christian Easley (Collinsville, Va.) walk to load the bases. Christian Torres came up with two outs and doubled home Maceda and Wentzlaff to cut the deficit to one.

After the Seawolves got one back in the third, Maceda responded by tying the game with a two-run home run to make it 4-4. UMBC took the lead in the fifth on a Torres sacrifice fly. However, the Retrievers would trail 7-5 heading into their final at-bats.

Torres struck once again with a two-run home run to tie it in the seventh. Stony Brook would throw the final punch, getting a walk-off single in the seventh to take the series and game one 8-7.

Torres had two hits and five RBI in game one. Maceda and Drew Roberts (Matthews, N.C.) has had two-hit games with Maceda driving in the other two runs.

Game Two:

Stony Brook once again jumped out to an early lead putting up two runs in their half of the second. UMBC would find their footing in the fifth, however, taking the lead with four runs.

Luke Belanger (Alexandria, Va.) singled on a bunt and would advance to third on a Jack Ryan (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) double. Ethan Wentzlaff would come up and double in both Ryan and Belanger on the very next pitch to tie the game. The Retrievers would not stop there as Dylan Wilkinson () doubled in Wentzlaff to give UMBC the lead, and Drew Roberts added to the advantage with an RBI double of his own.

UMBC starter Luke Wootten (Middletown, Del.) would settle in through six, exiting the game in the seventh with a 4-2 lead. Stony Brook, however, would respond with three runs in the seventh and two in the eighth to take a 7-4 lead into the ninth.

Christian Maceda would homer to lead off the ninth, but a double play ended the game, giving the Seawolves a 7-5 win.

Wentzlaff drove in two runs with Roberts collecting a pair of hits in the loss.

UMBC returns home next weekend to take on Binghamton on Saturday and Sunday, April 24-25.
