Retriever Baseball Heads to Long Island for Weekend Series at Stony Brook

BALTIMORE-- Fresh off their first series win of the campaign, UMBC baseball makes the trek to Long Island for a four-game series at Division B leader Stony Brook. The Retrievers won the final three games against Hartford last weekend to earn the series win and improve to 12-8, 7-8 AE, good for second place in the division.

Scouting the Retrievers:

-The Retrievers are coming off a big series win against Hartford last weekend at Alumni Field. UMBC dropped the first game but outscored the Hawks 35-18 over the final three games to earn the series win. Drew Roberts (Matthews, N.C.) earned Rookie of the Week honors after hitting .500 over the four-game set. 

-Ian Diaz (Philadelphia, Pa.) is leading the Retrievers at the dish with a .406 batting average collecting 26 hits in 64 at-bats. He has scored 16 runs with four doubles, two triples, and three home runs. Ryan Brown (Hagerstown, Md./St. James) leads the team with four home runs, with Christian Torres (Miami, Fla.) driving in a team-best 16 runs. 

-Tyler McDonnell (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) leads the pitching staff with an 0.82 ERA in 11.0 innings and six appearances. Reid Celata (Virginia Beach, Va.) leads the rotation with three wins in four starts. Joe Nestel (Drexel Hill, Pa.) leads the Retrievers with 22 strikeouts. 

Scouting the Seawolves:

-Stony Brook heads into the weekend at 15-8, 11-1 AE on the year having suffered their first America East defeat this past weekend against UMass Lowell and sit atop Division B just a few games in front of UMBC. Stony Brook swept their Friday doubleheader before falling in game one on Saturday, 4-3. 

-Evan Giordano leads a trio of Seawolves hitting over. 300 at .368. Giordano leads the team in hits (32), runs scored (23), doubles (7), home runs (3), and RBI (21). John LaRocca and Chris Hamilton are also over .300 batting .324 and .318 respectively.

-Sam Turcotte leads the pitching staff with a 1.87 ERA going 4-1 in seven appearances with six starts. He has two complete games in 43.1 innings of work with 45 strikeouts. Opponents are batting just .191 against him this season.

All-Time Series:

-The Retrievers and Seawolves have met 74 times prior to the weekend series with Stony Brook holding a commanding 58-16 lead in the series. The last time the two met was in 2019 where the Seawolves took five of six from the Retrievers. However, UMBC won four of seven from 2017-18 including a win en route to an America East title. 

On Deck:

-UMBC will return home to take on Binghamton next Saturday and Sunday at Alumni Field.
