Men's Soccer Opens America East Play at Stony Brook on Friday Afternoon

The UMBC men's soccer squad opens their 18th season of America East Conference play when they travel to Long Island to take on Stony Brook. The Retrievers and Seawolves will kick off at 1:00 p.m. at Kenneth LaValle Stadium and the game will be available for viewing on the America East digital network.  

Milestone: Head Coach Pete Caringi, Jr.,is the third coach in UMBC history to mentor a program for 30 or more seasons. He recorded his 300th is next victory on Feb. 27, as UMBC defeated George Washington, 1-0, in double overtime.

Honored

UMBC freshman forward Taylor Calheira (Towson, Md./Concordia Pre) and junior goalkeeper Quantrell Jones (Baltimore, Md./Kenwood) earned two of the three weekly honors from the America East Conference.

Calheira earned Rookie of the Week honors, while Jones was tabbed Defensive Player of the Week.

Making his collegiate debut, Calheira struck off a corner kick in the 106' as the host Retrievers opened the 2020-21 campaign with a 1-0 double overtime victory over George Washington on February 23. Calheira and fellow freshman Spencer Hanks (Odenton, Md./Arundel) led UMBC with three shots apiece.

Jones set a new career high with nine saves and recorded his eighth career shutout in the Retrievers' 1-0 double-overtime victory over the Colonials. Jones lowered his career GAA to 1.17 and needs three saves to reach 100 in his career.

  • UMBC is set to play six America East Conference games, which includes home and away dates with NJIT and Stony Brook and single game versus UAlbany and at Binghamton.
  • The America East Championships will be held April 15 and 17 at a single site, with the champion advancing to the NCAA Tournament.
  • The Retrievers finished the 2019 campaign with a mark of 6-9-1 and 1-5-1 in America East competition.
  • Sophomores Ryan Becher and Orlygur Omarsson earned America East All-Rookie Team honors in 2019.
  • Becher tied Tre Pulliam for the team scoring lead with 12 points (4g, 4a)
  • Juniors Jordan Ehart (Severna Park, Md./Mount St. Joseph) and Quantrell Jones and sophomore Julian Conze (Telgte, Germany) will serve as tri-captains for the 2020-21 campaign.
  • Twelve of 23 players on the squad are newcomers. Five freshmen (Calheira, Hanks, Jago Lott, Hans Nesheim, William Forby) started vs. GW.
  • UMBC holds a 13-8-1 mark all-time versus the Seawolves.  
  • The Retrievers are 7-2-1 in the last ten matches vs. SBU and have won two straight in the series.
  • UMBC won a 4-1 decision in the 2019 Senior Day finale over Stony Brook. Sophomore Dadi Ingason scored a goal and added an assist in the contest.  
  • Stony Brook is 0-2 after road losses at nationally-ranked St. John's (4-2) and Hofstra (4-1).
  • Freshman striker Aki Solvason has scored goals in both contests to date.
  • UMBC was selected to finish seventh by America East coaches in the pre-season poll.

UMBC opens America East play at home when they welcome league newcomer NJIT on Tuesday March 9. The rescheduled match is set for a 7:00 p.m. kick-off at Retriever Soccer Park. NJIT won the Atlantic Sun title and played in the NCAA Tournament in 2019
