NEWARK, N.J. - UMBC men's soccer clinched an America East playoff berth with a 1-1 draw at NJIT on Tuesday evening.
The Retrievers slot in as the number five seed, finishing with a 2-3-2 record and eight points in America East play. UMBC will travel to New Hampshire for Saturday's quarterfinal, thanks to a tiebreak advantage over UMass Lowell.
"Two and a half weeks ago, not many people believed we had a chance at making the playoffs," said UMBC head coach
Anthony Adams. "I believe in my players, and they continue to believe in one another. Although we didn't secure a win tonight, I am really proud of them, and we look forward to the playoffs."
After a scoreless first half that saw a pair of NJIT goals disallowed and
Emigdio Tormo Lopez make three saves,
Ricky Schissler put the Retrievers ahead in the 63
rd minute, finishing off a beautiful sliding cross from
Ryan Calheira.

Just over three minutes into the contest, Lee tried to guide home a corner with the right side of his body, but handling was the call. A few minutes later, Alvaro Heredia redirected a shot into the net, but he was called offside, keeping the match scoreless in the early going.
