UMBC Baseball Opens Four-Game in Three Day A10 Weekend at George Mason on Friday

BASEBALL REPORT VOL. 1 | FAN ATTENDANCE POLICY

BALTIMORE-- UMBC baseball looks to continue their hot start to the season with four games in three days this weekend at George Mason on Friday and home contests against St. Bonaventure on Saturday (DH) and George Mason on Sunday. The Retrievers are 3-0 after putting up 52 runs in their opening series sweep of Delaware State.

Fan Attendance Policy:

At this time, UMBC Athletics is allowing limited spectator attendance at our outdoor sports, including Men's and Women's Lacrosse, Men's and Women's Soccer, Baseball, and Softball. We will not be permitting fans to attend indoor events, including Volleyball.

Attendance is limited to two guests for each student-athlete and coach from both competing teams. Additionally, limited numbers of UMBC students, faculty, and staff that are approved to be on campus are permitted to attend regular-season outdoor events. Total attendance at any event is capped at 250 spectators.

Members of the general public who are not guests of student-athletes or coaches, and who are not members of the UMBC community as outlined above are still not permitted to attend.

All spectators will need to wear a mask at all times and remain socially distanced from others in the venue. Tailgating is prohibited. Spectators will also need to remain in approved spectator areas in order to keep themselves and our student-athletes safe. Please see below for specific information about approved spectator areas at our facilities.

The bleachers at Alumni Field are closed. Fans may view the game from the hill on the first base side, adjacent to the field. Spectators may access the fan area from the entrance to the stadium complex adjacent to the UMBC Event Center. All other entrances will be closed.

Scouting the Retrievers:

-UMBC heads into the weekend at 3-0 on the year after a season-opening sweep of Delaware State last weekend at Alumni Field. The Retrievers put up 52 runs over the three games and hit a blistering .385 as a team with five home runs. UMBC will see 10 of their first 12 games at home to start the season.

-Christian Torres (Miami, Fla.) was named America East Player of the Week after slashing .556/.636/1.000 in three games with five hits, seven RBI, and one home run. Ian Diaz (Philadelphia, Pa.) is leading the team with a .667 batting average. Nine different Retrievers are batting over. 300 who had at least five at-bats last weekend. 

-Reid Celata (Virginia Beach, Va.) and Joe Netsel (Drexel Hills, Pa.) both picked up wins last weekend after not giving up a run in either start. Celata threw 6.0 innings with six hits and five strikeouts. Netsel went 5.0 innings of a seven-inning game with just one hit and seven strikeouts. As a staff, the Retrievers have a 2.88 ERA with 21 strikeouts.

Scouting the Patriots:

-The Patriots come into the weekend at 1-3 after a season-opening sweep at the hands of Navy and a loss against William & Mary. The Patriots picked up their lone win against Richmond on March 5, 10-7 in Fairfax. 

-Thomas Trinca leads the team with a .583 batting average and a team-best seven hits. Scott Morgan, Cam Reckling, and Daniel Brooks are all hitting over .300 at .333, .313, and .308 respectively. Morgan leads the team with three RBI.

-Jared Lyons leads the staff with a 1-1 record in two starts with a team-best 9.1 innings of work and 10 strikeouts. George Mason as a staff has a 5.06 ERA with 24 strikeouts giving up 31 hits and 18 earned runs.

Scouting the Bonnies:

-St. Bonaventure will be making their 2021 season debut on Saturday after going 3-4 in a shortened 2020 season. They have not had a home contest since the end of the 2019 season going 3-0 on the road and 0-4 in neutral site games last year. 

-Last year, Brendyn Stillman led the team with a .519 average with 14 hits and 11 runs scored. He was tied for the team lead with 13 RBI with Tyler Kelder. Kelder hit .387 with seven home runs in 12 hits. 

-On the hill, Donovan Moffat led the rotation with a 3.21 ERA going 1-1 in two starts. He led the staff with 18 strikeouts in 14.0 innings of work. Michael Krauza led the bullpen with three appearances, going 1-0 in 5.0 innings. 

All-Time Series:

-UMBC and George Mason have met 61 times prior to this weekend and will meet for the first time since the 2019 season with the Patriots leading the series 44-17. UMBC has had the upper hand of late, winning four of the last five meetings dating back to 2013. The last time the two met, UMBC defeated George Mason 9-3 in Baltimore. 

-This will be the first time the Bonnies and Retrievers will meet in their histories. 

#AEBASE Honors:

-Christian Torres (Miami, Fla.) and Joe Nestel (Drexel Hills, Pa.) earned America East Player and Pitcher of the Week honors on Monday. Torres had a huge weekend from the plate with Nestel picking up a win in a series sweep of Delaware State to start the season 3-0. 

-Torres slashed .556/.636/1.000 over a three-game set with the Hornets this past weekend. He finished with five hits in nine at-bats with a double, home run, and seven RBI. He also stole two bases with six runs scored starting all three games. 

-Nestel had a big day on Sunday earning the win in the series finale. He went 5.0 innings giving up just one hit, one walk, and striking out seven batters. 

On Deck: 

-The Retrievers will open America East play against UMass Lowell next Saturday and Sunday. The Retrievers and River Hawks will play a doubleheader each day with both days starting at 2 p.m.
